Gimp.app CommentaryProblems still exist . . . - Version: 2.6.0, 10/13/2008 06:17AM PST

I still can't get the native version to launch on my Mac Pro running 10.5.5. The latest X11 version (2.4.7) works fine, but when I try to launch the native version, I get the icon in the Dock and the application name appears in the menu bar, but nothing else happens. I know the bit about waiting for a while—I always have to do this when installing a new version of the app that uses X11—but with the native versions, no matter how long I wait, niente. This has been the case with all of the experimental native versions. It's a puzzle . . .

Gimp.app CommentaryStill not stable - Version: 2.6.0, 10/2/2008 09:30AM PST

Both the app and the companion script hung and needed force quit. Also, click close red dot in a working window and app crashes. Cursor behavior erratic.

On the positive side, this version seems to be coming along w/o X-11 dependency.

Gimp.app Usage TipOfficial Gimp 2.4.x available for PPC/Intel/10.4/10.5 - Version: 2.4.5r2, 5/9/2008 02:38AM PST

Ilgaz
Hi,

I had a pleasant surprise when I checked gimp.org with Safari.

They have linked to http://darwingimp.sourceforge.net/download.html which lists 4 versions. I tried the Leopard 10.5.2 PPC version and it was the most responsive/troublefree Gimp I have tested on OS X.

There are binaries/installers (drag/drop) for
10.4 PPC/10.4 Intel, 10.5 PPC/10.5 Intel.

The thing you should care about is: Update your X11 to latest from Apple (via Software update) OR if you are on Leopard, get the current version built by same team who provides Apple X11 for Leopard from http://xquartz.macosforge.org

Glad to recommend Gimp.

both this version and v 2.4.5r1 on my Mac Pro running 10.5.2, and in each case, the application name appears in the menu bar and the dock shows it as running, but nothing happens, no matter how long I wait. Has anyone else had this experience? I'm able to use the Gimp version that runs under X11 without problems.

Gimp.app CommentarySingle developers work - Version: 2.4.5r1, 3/17/2008 06:54AM PST

A single developer tries his best to ship the native Gimp.app (no X11) and as far as I understand, can ship Intel only for now.

The actual Gimp guys are only busy with bad mouthing OS X , a OS which comes with a complete Unix '03 compliancy and on demand X11 which perfectly integrates to its own user interface.

They also say "48bit is for professionals". Well I don't know what SANE does but average end user scanner which is generally used for very important photos scanning does 48bit with a program like Vuescan. At least 36 bit I say.

I am all for open source applications but I have never seen Adobe bad mouthing Macintosh native filesystem or not supporting PowerPC. They took months of extra time to make sure PowerPC is supported by their applications.

I am not blaming this nice easily installed dmg's author, one can only imagine how hard to make such .app while the codes own developers hates OS X.

I am blaming the real developers who thinks they are providing a great alternative to Photoshop. Well, sorry to say... No.

PowerPC users or DTP professionals looking for a native , really open source and native application should watch the Krita development from KDE. Currently, Finkproject.org or macports will give you stable Krita running on X11.app all fine. The KDE 4.x KOffice Krita will be a native Cocoa/Carbon application.

Gimp.app Troubleshooting ReportX11 does not open - Version: 2.4.5r1, 3/17/2008 01:10AM PST

Even with the suggested 2.1.4 upgrade, X11 does not open at all. Gimp is there, ma no x11.

If anyone else has the problem of X11 not launching there is an update 2.1.4 on Open Source web site that solves the problem and X11 launches again.
