RCDefaultApp ReviewConfusing... - Version: 2.1, 11/28/2009 08:53AM PST

randomscreenname99
Confusing and full of unexplained acronyms and options that don't work intuitively and are not well explained in the dense and brain numbing readme file.

You can really mess things up with this thing. Once you click the 'Set as default' button there is now way to reverse this action.

If you're not a total geek who like to spend hours deciphering how an app works, don't touch this with a 10 foot barge pole!

RCDefaultApp Troubleshooting ReportThis version does not work with Panther - Version: 2.1, 9/21/2009 03:40PM PST

Al Varnell
Could not use this on my Panther machine. Developer has been notified and responded, in part, as follows:

"... there is no new functionality for Panther users in this release, except for the Spanish localization (which could be copied in manually if it is important). There is a new feature for 10.4, and more for 10.5+. It did work on 10.4, as I tested that successfully."

"...I'll look at it when I get the chance, which may not be for several days."

This was a nice pref pane, but it has not been updated to work with Leopard or Snow Leopard. No visible way to communicate with the developer. Too bad...

RCDefaultApp ReviewGood App but does it work with Leopard Mac OS X 10.5 ? - Version: 2.0.1, 7/16/2009 01:10AM PST

It seems to work but a new version, even without any change, which confirms compatibility with Leopard Mac OS X 10.5 would be great. It's not a simple game, I prefer to be sure with those kind of softwares.

RCDefaultApp ReviewWonderful for basic default settings! - Version: 2.0.1, 2/17/2008 12:00AM PST

I think this has been unfairly criticized here. It isn't a complete re-working of the OSX file system. It's a way to set default applications for basic files. The fact that it can't parse various editions of individual Adobe packages isn't a fault at all. It simply isn't designed to do that and doesn't claim to.

I think we should criticize software if it doesn't perform as advertised, but not because it doesn't have a feature you happen to want.

RCDefaultApp CommentaryVery useful and time-saving - Version: 2.0, 3/27/2006 04:47PM PST

This is an extremely useful tool, and if you're a network administrator, it's even more useful when you look at the "lstool" UNIX binary in the package. It lets you set default applications easily from the command-line, rather than trying to fiddle around with the XML in the user's preferences. Unbelievably easy, it solved a whole bunch of administrative problems I had, by just writing modules for our login script that invoke lstool.

This is a good application for those who know enough not to get into trouble. If you simply need to change an application to open specific files, do a get info on the file and change "open with", select the application you want...and if this is a permanent selection, use the "change all" button. As for everyone else, a very helpful and good application.

RCDefaultApp ReviewWould be great IF . . . - Version: 1.3, 3/4/2006 11:39AM PST

this thing could be used to set what application is to be opened by recognizing TYPE and CREATOR codes. My guess is, even one of these would help out a lot. I have ImageReady, Photoshop and GIF Animator capable of creating a 'GIF'. You really waste time when you double click the icon and the wrong app opens, Sometimes you can screw up the file too. Why does Safari default to open JPGs? This program fails at assigning the difference between an Illustrator EPS and a Photoshop EPS. In dealing with graphics all day, OS 10.4.x really needs help with this one, and I was really hoping that RCDefaultApp was going to be the 'silver bullet'. Nope. Until then, it's out. I realize this issue goes MUCH deeper into the OS, but someone should be able to create an add-on the fixes Apple's thoughtlessness towards it's main core of users.

RCDefaultApp ReviewRCDefaultApp - Version: 1.3, 2/28/2006 09:39AM PST

The application works on some file types, but trying to have Adobe products open with previous versions is not possible. I have customers that use older version of InDesign and Illustrator. I wanted to have files open with earlier versions of InDesign because of the backwards compatibility issues with InDesign. If you try to make any of the Adobe applications open to an earlier version it won't switch and will automatically default back to the most current version. For example I tried switching a .indd file from a default InDesign CS2 to open with InDesign CS1 or InDesign 2.02, but it automatically switches back to the CS2 version.
