Apple did a superb job with its new Fast User Switching feature in Panther (Mac OS X 10.3), but for users with long names, the associated menu item is a terrible waste of precious Menu Bar real estate.
Wouldn't it be nice if you could access the feature through a compact, icon-sized Menu Bar icon? WinSwitch does exactly that, closely matching the performance and style of the Apple-provided menu, but without all the bulk. In fact, it even corrects some problems with Apple's menu by eliminating certain "daemon" users which shouldn't show up in the list, and by improving the alignment of user icons in the menu. WinSwitch gives you rapid access to the Accounts preference pane, and is completely customizable, allowing you to choose from six different menu bar styles: Standard icon, User picture, Full username, Short username, First name only, and Initials. You can also optionally display the root user, define a hot key to take you back to the login window, and adjust the size of your user pictures both in the menu bar and inside the menu itself. For power users, WinSwitch can automatically run applications and scripts of your choosing whenever you switch in or switch out.

- French localization of the installer by Ronald Leroux.
- "Log out…" menu item visible when holding down the option key (feature request #332).
- Upgraded embedded WODebug framework to version 1.4 which is capable of providing much more detailed crash reports.
Changes in the beta:
- WinSwitch is now a Universal Binary which runs natively on both PowerPC and Intel processors; in addition to the WinSwitch Menu Extra itself all the supporting applications, tools and bundles are also Universal Binaries (this includes the WinSwitchHelper background application, the menu-extra-tool, the MenuCracker Menu Extra, and of course the installer).
- WOHotKey framework updated; user visible improvements include the addition of tool tips to the editing field when setting hot key combinations and the elimination of console warning message when clicking to the right of defined hot keys in an active hot key editing view.
- Corrected rare problem in which some user pictures would appear shrunken inside the menu (bug #137); to see this fix you must upgrade to Tiger (Mac OS X 10.4).
- Made changes to ensure that the vertical spacing of icons in the menu exactly matches that used by Apple's version of the Fast User Switching menu (bug #136); to see this fix you must upgrade to Tiger (Mac OS X 10.4).
- Now ships with the WOTest unit testing framework so that users can run the test suite locally.
- Minor refinements to the Spanish localization (now refers to "nombre de pila" rather than just "nombre").
- Corrections to Danish localization.
- Additions to Japanese localization, provided by Yuzuru Shiraiwa.

Although the developer has said Winswitch is compatible with Intel based Macs under Rosetta, it doesn't work.
Downloaded and installed yesterday on a new 20" 2Ghz Intel iMac. Winswitch failed to activate itself.

Although 3.1 works fine if you manually load WinSwitch.menu, it will not persist through restarts and must be loaded each time in Tiger. I hope a fix is soon coming.

tried to install in leopard 10.5.5 without success. macbook pro.
