Xfactor ReviewDon't bother paying - Version: 0.92, 6/14/2006 08:31PM PST

smelly
This shareware program, like many, has a "nag" reminder that pops up with increasing frequency as you use it.

I paid the license fee, received a "license file," opened the file with the Xfactor app, and what did I get for my money?

Nothing. The nag reminder still comes up. I wrote to the developer and received no reply.

I see why the payment page advises, "absolutely no refunds."

Use the app if you like. But don't bother paying.

Swoon
Binned it. Paying for an app that offers no difference to cabos or mlmac is pointless. And no contact, either. Nice interface, but still user-unfriendly.

Cabos is much better, and free.

Charging money for an application designed to facilitate software piracy? I split a gut laughing so hard when I saw this!

Acquisition also costs bucks for enabling piracy. The developer is a real snotty snob who enforces his serial keys with an iron fist. LMAO!

New Rule: If you shareware application is designed for the express intent of stealing other shareware, or music, then don't enforce a payware software key scheme!

This damned thing crashes my internet connection every time I run it (so you can imagine how often I run it) and I have to power-cycle my router just to get back online. I paid for a piece of junk because it was written in universal binary. I never use the damned thing, just rely on good old PowerPC Cabos. I don't get as many results, but I get a hell of a lot more downloads. Avoid this sow at all costs.

This was a fairly good product--not nearly as effective as Acquisition or Limewire, but it had its points. But don't expect to get a password if you pay the fee. I paid and didn't, and four emails to t he publisher got no response. As far as support, forget it: There's no contact possible with the developer, just a userr forum.

Worse: This is nagware in a major way. It might not be with a serial number, but paying won't get you one.

xfactor is a good system, but you need the old version (.26 or .32)... NOT .92!!

download it here: http://homepage.mac.com/jolix/Xfactor.dmg

and then follow the instructions for changing the notification options in the commentary/reviews below...

Xfactor Troubleshooting ReportForced to 0.92? How to 0.32... and forget 'bad' behaviours . SECOND PART. - Version: 0.92, 3/1/2006 08:01AM PST

In addition to the last comment. If the application insists quitting after a few minutes, because it communicates with the xfactor web, it might work to change the 'version' stated in the same preferences file. Change version '0,31999...' to '0,92', and save the file.
The edition procedure is the same, and the version is in one of the last 'key' lines of the file.

Really awful that an applications quits saying your version has expired, like mine 0.32, and then you're forced to upgrade to 0.92, which works only with macos 10.4, whether you have 10.4 or not.....XFACTOR SHOULD LET YOU CHOOSE YOUR VERSION!!!! Specially in this case.

HOW TO USE YOUR OLDER 0.32 VERSION?

Simply look for your preferences file, probably cc.xfactor.xfactor.plist, located in your user/library/preferences folder.

Open it with textedit, look at the end, where lot of <key> lines are displayed, and then look for <key>XAutoVersionCheck</key>, which is followed by <true/>. Change it to <false/>, AND THAT'S ALL.

Your application will not check more for a new version.

Hi,
i'm disappointed for the xfactor's crew behavior. I was an happy xfactor's user, until today.
What's happened? Simply, a popup window told me fairly:"Hey man your software are outdated, you can't try to use it, you MUST get the new version". I'was astonished, so i thought "You must be joking brother. Because i'm not kidding. This is my preferred apps and i don't want to change it. Why i can't use it ?".
Well, after a walk through my xfactor's folder (/Applications/Xfactor.app) and a simple mod of the "Info.plist" file (/Applications/Xfactor.app/Contents/Info.plist) the older become a (fake)brand new version. That is, changing the value of the "CFBundleVersion" key from 0.32 to 0.92 grants the execution. It's seems to work fine (until this moment), no need to get the unpredictable scrapnewversion, pending download from the past resumed fine and so on. Obviously I never thought to get a new version as xfactor's popup claimed. The reason is simple: if someone force me to upgrade its software (without escape) then, something smells like Chef's Chocolate Salty Balls. (Do you know South Park?)

Ciao Massimiliano
