Product Description:

DesktopID will display all sorts of machine information right on the desktop. The information is superimposed on the desktop pattern and can't be removed by the user.

What can be displayed?
Computer Name, OS Version, User name, ID, Group membership, Classic running or not.
Network interface, Location, IP Address, Netmask, Default Gateway, DNS Server, Domain, Broadcast Address, MAC Address, Media
Machine, CPU, Serial Number (10.3+ only), MAC Address, RAM, Uptime, Load Average.
Apple Remote Desktop (if installed), Information fields 1-4.
Custom shell commands

DesktopID is fully configurable, although there is no GUI admin tool available at this time. Check out the documentation on how to modify the settings.

What's new in this version:

v1.86 introduces a new mechanism for detecting the primary active hardware network interface. Previous versions would only display the information for Built-in Ethernet (en0). Version 1.86 will now be able to swap between interfaces as they become active.
The primary reason for this new feature is for users with laptops who connect in different ways at different locations.
Note: This new feature only works under 10.4. Users of older revsions of the OS will be restricted to displaying the data from en0.

  • Mac OS X 10.2

Additional Requirements:

  • Mac OS X 10.2 or higher
    Note: Version 1.86 has only been tested on 10.4.3.

A friendly word of warning about a piece of software wich I love.


Do not run this on Intel mac with MacOS X Server 10.4.x!


When running DesktopID on an Intel mac with MacOS X Server 10.4.x it will "freak out" after a while and hog 100% of CPU time. Thus leaving you with a machine wich does not respond. Me and my coleagues verified this on 2 separate cases in one morning.
We have never has ANY problems on PCC macs though.


Seems like it's time for an updated version ;^)
