Ram Disk Creator Reviewwrong promise "can play 2 hours DivX" - Version: 1.0.1, 5/14/2007 01:35PM PST

post60
whatever this promise might mean, i have copied an .avi-movie on the ram-disk and had to mention that the hard-drive-access, using the activity-monitor, was the same than watching it from the hard-drive by itself. guess it will be the same with whatever movie-format. so what for?

i was suspicious because the application DockFun from the same company is so far ok, but has seldom an update and a little bit arrogant support or feedback.

they make money and are not a reason for a lot of fun there at Donelleschi.

Ram Disk Creator ReviewWARNING! This thing is Dangerous!!! - Version: 1.0.1, 8/26/2006 07:54PM PST

I ran this program doing some photoshop benchmarks; when I went to quit the program, it needed to eject the ramdisk from my desktop. Somehow, this managed to "eject" all the files on my desktop, DELETING THEM ALL.

Ram Disk Creator CommentaryJust create a ram disk using OSX itself - Version: 1.0.1, 4/1/2006 04:23AM PST

It seems really silly to pay somebody to do this when you can just use OSX's built-in functionality. Create a plain-text file with the following commands in it:

#!/bin/sh
NUMSECTORS=524288
# 64mb = 131072
# 128mb = 262144
# 256mb = 524288
# 512mb = 1048576
# 1gb = 2097152
mydev=`hdid -nomount ram://$NUMSECTORS`
newfs_hfs $mydev
mkdir /tmp/ramdrive
mount -t hfs $mydev /tmp/ramdrive

Save the file with a name like 'mkramdisk.sh', and give it executable permissions:

chmod 755 mkramdisk.sh

Run it. Voila. This script is right out of the man page for hdid. You can also read about doing this at

Ram Disk Creator Usage TipIt could be useful... - Version: 1.0.1, 11/24/2005 10:10PM PST

I have tested this application (dual 2 GHz G5, 2Gb RAM, 10.4.3) for just over two hours. I have indeed measured a considerable reduction in the loading time for some appz that had been installed on the RAM disk. However, when I destroyed the RAM disk, it left behind its ghostly presence on the left hand side of any Finder windows (this is where your volumes are listed). I tried to eject them but failed (no volume present...).
I turned to email and contacted the author who has not replied in over three days.
It could be nice but need some serious bug fixing and certainly prompt support before I can consider purchasing this program. I had it in my dock: it is now gone for good or until I get a satisfactory reply.

Ram Disk Creator CommentaryShould be great for Filemaker - Version: 1.0.1, 12/27/2004 05:40PM PST

Any one who uses a disk intensive application, such as a database (Filemaker), then a RAM disk will be helpful. I doubt you'd notice any improvement for PhotoShop, perhaps only when reading/writing to a very large file located on your RAM disk.

I used to use a RAM disk to store my commonly used games, and then utilise it during long plane trips. A RAM disk can save on battery power for laptops.

Ram Disk Creator ReviewGo away - Version: 1.0.1, 12/27/2004 01:29PM PST

I didn't notice any speed up in Photoshop or anything else. I did notice that the disk was still showing up in the finder window after it was off the desktop and could not be ejected in the window. I had to do a restart. I hope there's no other fun things it left for me.

Ram Disk Creator CommentaryFine! Except... - Version: 1.0 Beta, 8/16/2004 01:24AM PST

...I am actually not willing to pay the full fee for a beta product. I'd like to have some auto-mount features. <br>But as far as I have tested it, it works fine and flawlessly. I use it just for special cases: In Logic Pro for creating the backup files for audio editing (about 5 times faster than reading and writing the file to HDD) or if you have more than one audio editing steps in various apps (copy to RAM disk, edit, copy back to HDD). Even better: Use it as your first Temp-Drive for Photoshop - it speeds Photoshop up, more than if you select more app RAM. RAM disks always have awesome performance. Don't use it for cache files.

Ram Disk Creator ReviewWorks great! except where you need it.. - Version: 1.0 Beta, 6/15/2004 04:16PM PST

I've heard there are big problems with RAM disks in 10.3, and kudos to the author on the interface and success with this thing.

I wanted this thing so I could put safari's cache in the RAM (for security and performance reasons).

It's probably a problem with safari, but I couldn't link it or alias it to ~/Library/Caches/Safari and have safari use it.

Maybe if the author would allow us to set the mounted disk name instead of the mounted directory (ram1285.2 or whatever), it'd work, but until then I can't use this thing. Also, it'd be nice to mount the volume in /Volumes/ instead of as a disk image.. So it's minus two stars for today!

I really don't understand how the user below could say that this developer is playing jokes on us! it's pathetic!

Ram Disk Creator is the only application which works. Try to use it as the user below did. Make 256Mb disk, then copy a file of 100MB inside and then duplicate it. Ok it takes 1 second.
(of course you must not have 100 applications open and you must have a GB of RAM)

Do the same in your Hard disk..... the duplicate procedure will take about 5-10 Seconds....

try it and see if the user below is right or not...
