Font Finagler CommentaryProblem - Version: 0.5.3, 1/24/2008 12:00AM PST

I have just upgraded to the latest version of Font Finagler. I am running OS 10.4.11 on a G4 Powerbook and a G5 Desktop. Immediately after installation and running the application I had lost all my information on an application ISafe Pro 1.2 This is an application that stores all your passwords for websites such as banks, credit cards, etc. At the moment I have found no other problem but be prepared and backed up just in case.

I do have my complete HD backed up on an external drive so I will be ok. Have not decided but may revert back to the older version. I think after getting my iSafe Pro application working again I will run the new version of Font Finagler to see if the same problem occurs. Backup Backup.

Font Finagler ReviewExcel and Word startup problems solved - Version: 0.5.3, 11/5/2006 07:21AM PST

My problem: Excel and Word 2004 would not start up. Each would crash every time. I thought the problem might be font-related, because Excel would tell me there was a corrupt system font (there really wasn't). FontBook was reporting similar problems.

Based on recommendations at the MacFixit web site, I installed Font Finagler 0.5.3 and ran it once. Excel and Word have since started up and worked without problems, the way they used to.

What more can I ask? And it's cheap, too, at $10.

I should add that my membership at MacFixit has paid for itself many times over, since I downloaded and read the members-only ebook "Be Your Own Mac OS X Troubleshooting Guru". It taught me many things, including the existence of easily corrupted font caches.

Font Finagler ReviewMessed up my system - Version: 0.5.3, 10/17/2006 03:03PM PST

Messed up my whole system on MacOS 10.4.8. Suddenly all websites were displayed badly, wrong font sizes, bold and italic missing etc.. The Apple Mail GUI was completely warped out of proportion, here also: wrong font sizes etc.. Then I used the font cache cleaner in TinkerTool System v1.6, and everything was okay again. So it seems that the current version of Font Finagler (0.5.3) is not suitable for the latest MacOS version. Definitely needs an update.

Font Finagler ReviewSlow Startup Cured - Version: 0.5, 3/8/2005 10:10AM PST

Font Finagler found several large system (10.3.6) font cache files (one was 105MB). After cleaning these files my startup went from 3 minutes to 30 seconds. Worth every penny of the $10 fee.

It did speed up Panther 10.3.8 start-up considerably (no more endless watching the spinning ball and blank screen) AND it also did speed up considerably Suitcase X1 initializing at start-up. Wow!

At a local high school computer graphics lab where our MUG meets, there were a few iMacs that took about 3 minutes to go from the login screen to the desktop. Xupport had been ran and other caches had been deleted and only improved login time by a few seconds. A tech who was there servicing a Mac (yes, they do occasionally break) suggested Font Finagler. Would you believe that there were 20 to 30,000 fonts cached on a few machines with 51,000 on the worst? Needless to say, it made a believer out of me. I registered on the spot. Excellent little utility and well worth the shareware fee.

Font Finagler CommentaryRestart required - Version: 0.5, 2/16/2005 06:44AM PST

I am pretty sure that it didn't warn me that a restart will be required when I run the "Clean" Feature. I am not an uptime freak, but it would be nice to be informed ahead of time that I am going to have to restart everything else going on on my computer. I log into a number of different applications and servers to start my day.
I am also not excited about having to pay $10 for a feature. That is "Demoware" in my book. Other than that, I think the application is pretty straightforward.

Font Finagler CommentaryTrying it out... - Version: 0.5, 11/15/2004 11:54AM PST

I read your note that a future version would be able to open font suitcases ala OS 9. I'm going to assume that means we'll be able to move the screen fonts out of the suitcase in addition to viewing them. That would make Font Finagler worth $10. What could make it even better? Give it sudo access to manage (move or delete) fonts in "/Library/Fonts," "/System/Library/Fonts" and all users' "~/Library/Fonts" folders. Then maybe you could add a filter to display a list of duplicate fonts... I might have to buy a site license if it could do all that...
