VTDI had a real difficult time getting to the point where I could see it working at all. It requires an online connection to view the UI. Auction Sniper is basically a web application imbedded in a desktop application shell. Plus it goes to great lengths to hide the fact that it is a subscription service. The user is required to register online in order to trial the application. Registration requires giving a substantial amount of personal information including one's eBay user ID and password! The user must also agree to a somewhat verbose user agreement before handing over ones personal information, still without knowing how the tool works. After registering, the user is immediately directed to pay $45 before ever trying the software or seeing the UI. The $45 product license fee is only good for one year after which it must be renewed again. The trial version consists of having access to one relatively inconsequential feature, the "Daily Auto Search" which is almost void of documentation or value. I cannot honestly see the advantage in using the Auction Sniper's Auto Search function. eBay's own way of subscribing to automated searches works much better and is easier to use. Now here is another strange thing, the product name changes from Auction Sniper to PowerSnipe once it is installed. There seems to be something squirrely about the whole experience of using this tool. Ultimately the product does work but I felt tricked into using it and also felt the effort required to understand what was going on was unwarranted. Ultimately I would like to see the developers find a way to allow users to go through the experience of using Auction Sniper, Auto Search , Power Snipe or whatever it's eventually called without the cumbersome registration process and certainly WITHOUT PAYING FIRST. I have used several online auction sniping services in the past that were all easier to use, more fairly presented, and less expensive. Also I personally do not like subscription based services. If I wanted one I would be looking on the web and not for a desktop application. For my money I would have preferred spending it on another product.
For those that haven't paid their $45 yet, you might want to check out some of teh other options first like JBidWatcher. Not only is it a better designed product than Auction Sniper but today is available for free. Though I would consider JBidWatcher less mature than PowerSnipe/Auction Sniper I believe it holds much more promise. If you are not a regular eBayer or do not plan on doing a lot of bidding over the coming year I would stay away from this product and find something cheaper. I don't see any advantage in using Auction Sniper over alternative solutions.
