Product Description:
Freeway Express brings the same WYSIWYG approach to web design as our award-winning professional tool, Freeway Pro. This means you can start building your site with an idea, not a list of "can't do that in HTML" restrictions, and you'll see your results immediately. In action, Freeway Express handles like a desktop publishing or "Works" application. You draw or simply drag and drop pictures, text, graphic headlines and rich media right onto the page. Scale, rotate, distort, and overlap these graphic elements and combine them with HTML text with total web design freedom. Each time you change your design, Freeway Express completely re-writes the html code and re-compresses all the graphics, so your site is always optimized for the Web. And since your entire site is generated from one Freeway document, there is virtually no way to create a bad link from page to page.

Actions
- The Navigation Popup Action target now works within framesets
- The Add Action dialog now lists actions alphabetically or hierarchically
- The Menu Bar Action submenus now work if they contain images
- Fixed a spelling mistake in the PNG Transparency Fix Action
- Fixed a problem where Freeway would add spurious characters into code generated by Actions if DOS Line Feeds were selected in the Document Setup Output tab [Pro only]
- Pages containing the Menu Bar Action could cause JavaScript errors in Internet Explorer
Import
- Freeway now supports Lab, multichannel, or duotone Photoshop images [Pro only]
- Freeway can now import 16-bit CMYK Photoshop images [Pro Only]
- Improved the reading of layered images which don't have a composite graphic [Pro only]
- Fixed a problem with nonbreaking spaces in an imported RTF file
- Fixed a problem with text encoding in imported RTF text
- Fixed a problem with duplicated characters in Danish RTF text import
- Fixed a problem with incorrect characters after pasting from MS Word
Output
- Problems outputting character ligatures (oe etc.) in ISO-8859-1 encoding have been fixed.
- Fixed a problem with UTF16 output
- _lp style is not output with a space which caused problem in IE browsers
- Fixed a problem where temporary paragraph styles were not being published
Styles [Freeway Pro only]tag
- Fixed a problem a problem where deleting a style from the Edit Styles dialog replaces it incorrectly
- Paragraph styles applied to text no longer display in the default style when other styles are applied to the text
- An <em> style which is applied to a whole paragraph of text is now published.
- Multiple styles of the same name renaming in styles palette
- Empty temporary styles in legacy files are now removed
Other
- Fixed a problem with pasting extended markup into tables
- Fixed a problem with text disappearing after dragging a child into an item that contains text
- Fixed a problem where graphics drew in the wrong place when inserted into inline GIF text
- Files created on systems earlier than 10.4.5 in which Zapf Dingbat characters were typed from the keyboard now display correctly in 10.4.5 onwards.
- Text marks on ruler no longer ignore padding on items
- The Open Recent menu command no longer displays hidden file extensions
- Document info displayed Upload user name with the title "Server"
- Fixed a problem where the wrong page was displayed when you preview into a browser while the WebKit preview is displayed in Freeway.
- Fixed a problem where reducing the width of table cells containing text had strange limits
- Freeway no longer uploads sites which have been only partially published (e.g. if the publishing process that precedes upload has been cancelled).
- Fixed a bug where preset page sizes in the document setup were huge
- When adding extended attributes to an external link these attributes were not properly accessible in JavaScript
- Can now paste text into Inspector palette fields
- Copying the page title in the Inspector Palette now works
- Can now paste URLs into URL items
- Inline items were moving down on the page after importing a legacy file
- Fixed a problem with aligning inline graphics in flowed items
Action Writing
- Freeway now respects the 'action-appliesto' tag when deciding which actions can be applied by a user
- File Parameters (in Actions) with the web-graphic attribute listed all files instead of jpeg, gif and png files.
- Action-markup and action-javascript now have a 'src' parameter making it possible to have markup in a separate file
- Added a new JavaScript method fwFindAllItems to the fwItem. This will return all the subelements of a certain type
- The page method 'fwPage.fwWebAddress()' now works properly
- There is a new 'help-tag' attribute that allows you to specify help tags (tool tips) for Action parameters
- Added a new 'debug' attribute to suppress the abort button in alert, prompt etc. and better name these window titles
- Added a new global attribute fwApplicationName for Actions writers to be able to better target Freeway in AppleScript
- Added a mechanism where Freeway Actions could be better bound to versions of Freeway

I had been producing graphic intensive web sites for years, but was always been frustrated by the numerous steps to get graphics, text and multimedia in the appropriate format from source data to the web page. Initially I coded my sites with html, but with changes in browsers, I kept running into compliance issues. So I gave it up for a long time until I needed to produce a web site for myself.
With the advances in WYSIWYG web development software, I was sure I would find a strategy that would help me. After trying Dreamweaver and a couple of others, I was discouraged. But just before going back to generating my own code I ran across a podcast about Freeway Express on iTunes. I watched and thought it was to good to be true. So after downloading the demo and trying it (following the podcast tutorial) for a couple of hours, I forked over the $79 bucks and have been happy as a clam ever since. I built an entire website in one night (8 hours give or take) from scratch!
Basically it take the tragedy of coding, formatting and media conversion out of the creative process. I think its fantastic and would encourage any one else to at least try it.

I cannot express my level of happiness to find Freeway Express. I am a past Dreamweaver user, and while I can't write HTML, I learned How to use it in order to build my site years ago. I needed to do an update recently, and realized that the version of Dreamweaver I had was 5 years old, and the new version was prohibitively expensive at $399.
I searched for WYSIWYG apps and settled with the Freeway Pro demo. Even that was cheaper, at $249.
Keep in Mind that every WYSIWYG editor acts differently, and as the developer points out many times, the site files from one, dreamweaver for example, are not compatible with another (freeway). So After completing the 3 tutorials, I realized that this program did exactly what I wanted to, and in a smart, intuitive way. I recreated my site in 2 days from scratch, and it is now so easily editable with the Master pages that Freeway taught me to create. Not only that, but I realized that the "Express" version did everything I needed, at only $79!!
Freeway Express is highly recommended.
As with any new program of this sophistication, don't expect to be able to use it without reading the manual or completing the tutorials.
As with a previous review, the only con for me is the lack of multiple undos. But now that I know that it does make me more careful.

As with a previous review, the only con for me is the lack of multiple undos. But now that I know that it does make me more careful.
Initially, I was overwhelmed. The manual is more than 400 pages long and tough to read. The video tutorials are moderately helpful, but they omit a lot of details. My first 3 or 4 days of working with this product went pretty slowly.
But - here's the bright point - the tech support is excellent. Honestly, it's probably the best I've ever encountered. They take time to read and understand your questions, and they provide detailed answers with good explanations. And they add more information (beyond your question) - anticipating other things that might confuse you, such as explaining why to use a particular image format in a particular situation.
After a few emails with the Softpress tech support, I felt much more comfortable using Freeway, and work on the web site went much more smoothly.
I didn't try the Pro version - but the Express version has everything (and probably more) that an amateur web site developer would need. And once I got the hang of using the program, I found it very easy to use.
The tech support people could probably reduce their workload a lot by either improving the manual or by posting more (and better) video tutorials on their web site. If the manuals or video tutorials were better, I would probably give 5 stars. On the other hand, if tech support had not come to my rescue so well (and if I had to rely on the manual and the existing tutorials) I would probably give 3 stars. As is, this product earns a solid 4 star rating.
BTW, a few other people have complained about lack of multiple Undos. I haven't found a need for multiple undos. Occasionally I use a single undo. If a really screw something up, I just delete the screwed up item and recreate it. The software is so easy to use, that it's pretty painless to have to do that.
Note: I almost never write software reviews, but the tech support was so stellar that I felt compelled to post this.
