I had been trying for weeks to get MapSource 6.11.1 to transfer waypoints, tracks and routes to and from my Garmin Etrex VistaCx (via Windows XP Pro, Virtual PC 7.0.2, OSX 10.4 and my PowerBook G4's USB port). Saving and transfering gdb files using GPS Babel finally provided the bridge. Not much documentation, but reasonably self explanatory.

Here's what I had to do to get it to kind of run. I took everything in the extracted "gpsbabel-1.2.7" folder (except the folder macgpsbabel) and put it inside of a folder named gpsbabel. Then I went into the folder macgpsbabel and double clicked MacGPSBabel.pbproj. I hit build and go in XCode. Everything built fine but when the app runs it says:
Applescript error:
sh: line 1: /Users/bruce/Desktop/gpsbabel-1.2.7/macgpsbabel/build/MacGPSBabel.app/Contents/Resources/gpsbabel: is a directory (126)
Anyone got a solution?

1st attempt to build failed. I found from the Xcode tools error log that the macgpsbabel folder had to be renamed gpsbabel and the root folder also had to be named gpsbabel. I renamed them and tried again. No errors were logged and a MacGPSbabel.app was created, complete with custon icon. However the "get info" showed it as v. 1.2.4beta07242004. I got an error launching it that said the application was "damaged or incomplete". I'm not a programmer, but given decent instructions for a "makefile" or a GUI like Xcode tools, I'll at least give it a try. Though Mr. Lee was a bit harsh, I too appreciated the version 1.2.5 download that was pre-compiled. Since presumably the developer has to do this anyway to test it, why not just post the compiled app and include the source separately or a link to it on the sourceforge site. It would make it a LOT easier on us non-programmers. I guess for now I'll stick to v.1.2.5 as it has worked OK the few times I've needed it.
The Tower still stands...

Before I'm supposed to be able to 'flatten' this Tower, anybody want to let me know what I'm supposed to do with the folder-full of itty-bitty files that's all I get when I download this thing?
I'm supposed to build it myself? With what?
Pass the trowel.
This isn't a Mac OS X build, this is elite-ware for people who feel smug that they know all about unix.

This is the only way I can connect my mac to my Garmin Vista C... when it works, it is wonderful. I also use it to convert my GPX files from geocaching.com to text and print a booklet to take with me.
It does, however, crash fairly frequently, preventing me from giving it a full 5-star rating.
Overall, an outstanding effort - especially considering Garmin provides third-parties with no info about their USB protocol and offers no mac drivers. Fix the crashes and this will be a wiinner!

So far, I've found *no* other application that does what this one can: upload and download waypoints/tracks/routes to my Garmin eTrex Vista Color, a USB-based GPS. Nothing else even sees it, but MacGPSBabel 1.2.5 has had no problems making the transfers.
Apologies for my kid brother

First, sorry, my brother Al (Kaida) can be such a jerk.
I like this product. Having just gotten a Garmin myself I really appreciate what this app has to offer. It is pretty easy to use.

I have been using GPSBabel in conjunction with my Garmin GPS MAP 60C and Chimoosoft's TerraBrowser.
What a dynamite combination!
Everything works fine. I download the date from the Garmin with GPSBabel, and then I take the date and use it with TerraBrowser, and TerraBrowser shows a track of my trip on seamless satellite photomaps.
Thanks for GPSBabel, it is a sweet, free program.

Version 1.2.3 was released on 5/2/04 and the download says it was created on that date. What gives?
