Curio ReviewA great app gets even better - Version: 6.0, 9/10/2009 08:53AM PST

Vermonter17032
Curio is one of my favorite applications on my MacBook. It is so versatile, I am able to use it as a scrapbook, note taker, project manager, novel organizer, brain storming, and more.

I use OneNote on my PC at work. Curio is probably the closest thing to OneNote for Mac, though it is also different in many ways. It lacks some of the power, but has additional features that ON does not.

The new version adds the very useful feature of being able to insert a table, and in the usual Zengobi way includes some wonderful new methods of making tables convenient to create and use -- just check out the way in which Cuiro will take a collection of photographs and build a table around them!

Curio CommentaryCurio 5 requires Mac OS 10.5 - Version: 5.0, 8/16/2008 10:26PM PST

Curio 5 requires Leapord (Mac OS 10.5). Tiger is no longer supported. Too bad, but there must be a good reason to require it.

Curio ReviewExcellent update - Version: 5.0, 8/14/2008 09:21PM PST

Curio has long been an innovative product, and version 5 continues to expand its capabilities as a creative organization tool. The new web views, and cross project linking are something I've wanted for a long time. The new project organization functions and iCal syncing are items I had even thought would make it in to the product any time soon, yet here they are. This is a great product which is open on my desktop all day every day, and is an excellent example of great Mac software. It isn't OmniOutliner, or OmniGraffle, or Yojimbo, or Microsoft Project, but it is an elegant combination of many of their features, and more. I'm definitely a satisfied user. Can't wait to see where they go with Curio 6.

Curio CommentaryFree upgrade? - Version: 5.0, 8/14/2008 12:23AM PST

A question to the previous reviewer. Where can people get that "free upgrade" to version 5?

<b>"Discounted Curio 5 upgrade licenses are available to current Curio 4 (and earlier) customers, check the online store for details."</b>

Zengobi's store shows "Upgrade to Curio 5 Pro from older Curio Pro 69.00"

Originally I was not even going to upgrade to version 4 based on Zengobi's upgrade policy. I upgraded once they had an attractive discount. Their policy has not improved. I may eventually upgrade if the price is attractive, but by now I prefer to support other developers.

Curio ReviewGreat Application Keeps Getting Better - Version: 5.0, 8/13/2008 08:17PM PST

This is a great application, and one really oriented towards the visual person (about 80% of us in the USA). For best practices, use a tablet with it. I have used it in meetings, on conference calls, for presentations. It just works!

I am using the Pro edition, and the upgrade to 5.0 is free! I love the support the company gives, and a free full-version upgrade is a rare and beautiful thing these days. I highly recommend this software.

Curio ReviewWorks well for me ... always has - Version: 4.2.4, 6/2/2008 03:36PM PST

This is a review of Curio ... all versions. I just downloaded the 4.2.4 release, and I will be using it.

Claiming that an application is worthless because you loose some data is pointless ... unless it happens ALL THE TIME. Not saying it didn't hurt ... it always does unless you back up your data regularly.
I run Apple Backup every day on my curio files every day. I have never had to use any of those backups.

I have used Curio for quite awhile, and I find it very useful for what I do. It does have a lot of features that I do not use, yet. I wish I had more time to play with it and get really comfortable with all the things it does ... but I work, and for that work, Curio is very helpful.

BTW, I'm a graphic designer (30 yrs worth), and I have been using Macs since the Mac Classic. I do know a good useful application when I find it.

I give it 5 stars ... because I KNOW it works.

Curio CommentaryCrash - lost all data! - Version: 4.2.2, 3/20/2008 07:38AM PST

With their upgrade pricing at 50% off, it seemed somewhat more reasonable to upgrade from version 3 to 4, even though the feature additions are not that compelling. I had used version 3 from time to time with some sucess on 10.4, but haven't opened it in several months.

After using the new 4.2.2 for 1/2 hr with a small doc with ink text and some box diagrams (pretty simple), the app locked up with a spinning beach ball - all was lost. Tried it again and the same thing happened.

Stay away! I'm remembering why I migrated back to pen and paper rather than using the computer for this type of brainstorming work. This product is NOT worth the price charged for it, and is unstable.

Curio ReviewI like it, and use it a LOT - Version: 4.2.2, 2/12/2008 12:00AM PST

Title says it all. I'm a graphic designer and I love this program. I find it very useful at work, and at home.
I really could care less if someone else likes it, loves it, or hates it. BTW ... I could care less if it did MIND MAPPING or not! If you want to do MIND MAPPING ... do it in private or keep it to yourself, LOL. Sounds like some kind of body snatching thing anyway. JK ... chill out ... I'm not serious. I don't use mind mapping.

Seriously, I love the program. I was not happy with the upgrade price and probably could have lived with 3.x ... but heck ... I like these guys, and MAYBE THEY WILL GET A CLUE ... IT'S TOO EXPENSIVE! Hope you're listening. My boss was totally disappointed with the cost ... much less paying for me to upgrade. I bought it myself [that's one out of five people who MIGHT have purchased it if it wouldn't have cost of over $650 bucks!), because I FIND IT USEFUL. Nuff said.

It works WELL, it's stable, and does a lot of things that are pretty dang cool. Love it, or leave it alone.
4 stars ... because it's [rrrrr] expensive.

Curio CommentaryNot the premiere Mind-mapping application - Version: 4.2, 1/9/2008 02:37PM PST

(1 of 2 users found this comment useful)

Martin Turner--2008
This is a response to the developer's claims, rather than to the product.

Curio may be very good, but the claim that it is the 'premiere mind mapping…' application is simply wrong. Mind Mapping is a well-defined concept developed by Tony Buzan. There are a number of applications out there which implement it properly, but Curio, which only features straight lines (not curved) and forces you to write on the symbols rather than on the lines themselves, is not one of them. NovaMind and Inspiration are both better implementations of Mind Mapping.

It's also not the premiere project management tool. Project Management is also a well-defined concept. Download Merlin if you want to see what a real project management tool looks like. Essential features of project management include Gantt charts and PERT diagrams.

This may well be amazing software for what it does -- but, at least based on the features and specifications on the developer's site, it doesn't do full-blown mind-mapping or project management.

Sorry.

Curio CommentaryCurio is a hit? - Version: 4.1, 11/13/2007 05:15PM PST

I just thought it was interesting to receive an email saying that Curio was a hit and was "our most successful release to date, with an upgrade rate far surpassing the industry average...
...From the feedback we've received, everyone loves the new Mind Mapping functionality and Snippets service."

I tend to agree with the reviews at MacUpdate regarding Curio 4. The upgrade fee to Curio Pro is ridiculous.
Regarding Mind Mapping, I still prefer Nova Mind and more recently began using XMIND Pro. Thanks to a MacUpdate promo XMIND Pro was actually cheaper than Curio's upgrade price.

I'm very happy with Curio 3 and I'm glad to see it evolving, but their upgrade policy has alienated some Curio users, myself including.
I'm glad it's a hit, but not for me.
