Product Description:

Compare Folders is a powerful utility designed to compare two folders and tell you which files and folders are the same, which are new, and which have been modified. This saves you the effort of reading through lists in the Finder and using Get Info to sort it all out.

Compare Folder's comparison engine is threaded to work efficiently and allows you to use the Comparison Selector Sheet to customize which attributes to compare or ignore. Features such as a clean, intuitive, Aqua interface with robust drag and drop support, Item Actions (Open, Reveal in Finder, Get Info, Delete, Rename, Lock/Unlock, Inspect, Copy To..., Upload to iDisk, Archive, FilePeek), built-in Get Info windows, an Item Inspector and seamless integration to open any item you click on make it a polite OS X citizen with flexibility at your fingertips. All of this and more without leaving a single window. .Mac support gives you easy access to back up or share files you've compared.

What's new in this version:

  • Multiple selection support for editing comments and lock state for items in Item Inspector
  • Reset dialog removed, now clears all accordingly
  • Removed .mac/MobileMe and iDisk upload support (3rd party usage is no longer a focus of this service)
  • Comparison Details is kept updated with information regardless of whether a file has been opened
  • Comparison Details remembers if open across launches
  • Added Item Inspector menu item and improve loading performance
  • Properly exclude any item that exists within a hidden folder or is hidden itself from results
  • Properly exclude only contents of .app (not .app*, like .apple or others)
  • Added content exclusion support for .menu, .plugin, .preferencePane
  • Detect writability of license file and alert user accordingly
  • Leak and memory usage optimizations throughout the app
  • Fixed comparison sheet showing when saving an already completed comparison
  • Improved warning for merge workflow

Compare Folders CommentaryCannot be used for more than 1000 files - Version: 3.2, 3/30/2009 03:40AM PST

This application looks like it does exactly what I want, but when I tried it on the large folders I was trying to compare, it did the compare OK, but hung the computer and ultimately crashed.

According to the website, Compare Folders should not be used for folders with more than 1000 files in them.

This is a known bug by the developer, and I look forward to when it is fixed.

Compare Folders CommentaryProblem Solved - Version: 3.1, 6/21/2008 04:23AM PST

There is something similar built into OSX, but it just wouldn't solve my problem.

I had 3 iTunes libraries on internal and external drives. Some songs were in all three libraries. Some songs were in two of the libraries and some were in only one, but it could be any one of the three. Two of the libraries had hundreds of songs and the third had thousands. The thought of sorting out this chaos manually was a nightmare. Compare Folders to the rescue.

I decided to pick one as the master library and compare the two other libraries in turn. You can view duplicate, unique or similar items and so using the Copy To function you can soon get the chaos into order.

I could have done the same job with one of the synchronisation apps that I have, but the real benefit of Compare Folders is the way that what is happening is laid out so well.

Criticism? No family licence available. With soon to be 4 Macs in the house, this would have been a nice option.

I've been using the program for several months and have had no problems withit under OSX10.4.6. Compares folders on external drives with no hesitation. The drag and drop interface is a snap. Runs quickly having compared folders with 1000s of files.

Sure miss PowerMerge under OS9 though!
