Compare Folders CommentaryCannot be used for more than 1000 files - Version: 3.2, 3/30/2009 03:40AM PST

This application looks like it does exactly what I want, but when I tried it on the large folders I was trying to compare, it did the compare OK, but hung the computer and ultimately crashed.

According to the website, Compare Folders should not be used for folders with more than 1000 files in them.

This is a known bug by the developer, and I look forward to when it is fixed.

Compare Folders CommentaryProblem Solved - Version: 3.1, 6/21/2008 04:23AM PST

There is something similar built into OSX, but it just wouldn't solve my problem.

I had 3 iTunes libraries on internal and external drives. Some songs were in all three libraries. Some songs were in two of the libraries and some were in only one, but it could be any one of the three. Two of the libraries had hundreds of songs and the third had thousands. The thought of sorting out this chaos manually was a nightmare. Compare Folders to the rescue.

I decided to pick one as the master library and compare the two other libraries in turn. You can view duplicate, unique or similar items and so using the Copy To function you can soon get the chaos into order.

I could have done the same job with one of the synchronisation apps that I have, but the real benefit of Compare Folders is the way that what is happening is laid out so well.

Criticism? No family licence available. With soon to be 4 Macs in the house, this would have been a nice option.

I've been using the program for several months and have had no problems withit under OSX10.4.6. Compares folders on external drives with no hesitation. The drag and drop interface is a snap. Runs quickly having compared folders with 1000s of files.

Sure miss PowerMerge under OS9 though!

Compare Folders CommentaryExlude extension... - Version: 2.5.1, 10/30/2006 10:28PM PST

I have a folder of Quark docs that my designers don't name with an extension and a folder of PDFs generated by my workflow system with the ,PDF extension.
Even though I uncheck the 'File Type' box all files are unique because of the extension on the name. If we're not checking file type the extension should be excluded from the comparison.

Compare Folders Commentary2.5.1 Launches but... - Version: 2.5.1, 8/18/2006 02:24PM PST

Well, 2.5.1 launches but I could not get it to compare a folder located on different internal drive. That is, folder 1 located on internal drive A and copy ( several months old ) of folder 1 located on internal drive B.

Not sure if it can compare folder's locacted on different internal drives.

Apparently there's some sort of library or something it's looking for that doesn't come with the application's installer.

I just tried this version and it fell over on its face. Seems slow as molasses and I don't find the interface very intuitive.

Not sure what the problem is - will reserve feedback until talking to developer. But I too had this program crash after 30,000+ files compared (using two folders with 6,000 files in each).

Compare Folders ReviewForget the "less than 5-star rating...totally misleading - Version: 1.2.6, 11/8/2004 02:26PM PST

and most likely caused by just a couple of posts where some rabid user encountered a problem, and rather than contact the developer (or maintain his/her own system to "prevent" problems), came here to vent and give low rating, thereby bringing down the overall rating.

This app definitely deserves 5 stars; it does a wonderful job of giving very useful information relative to the contents of two folders you need to know about; it's fast, highly customizable in your desired "comparison" criteria, and presents results nicely with options to perform a number of desired actions on each item listed in the results, if so desired.

It took me a few minutes to get the "hang" of it, and, since my first comparison involved folders with nearly 10,000 files/folders in each of the two being compared, and the one folder had literally hundreds of "different" files due to a malfunction in a backup utility, I was unsure that the results were accurate or would be meaningful.

I soon discovered that this app was 100% accurate; I just had a really messed-up "second" folder that was one of the two being compared.

Anyway, I highly recommend this app, even if you're not exactly sure how often that you will use it; download it and buy it and I bet you'll find yourself using it quite often.

Also, currently, there is a "discount" deal on this app together with another utility from this developer; Drive Gauge, which gives you a nicely-presented display of one's drive's current usage/capacity in a percentage guage. Very well done, and just a nice little utility to have available whenever you might like to check status. Also, provides warnings when drives are getting close to full.

Both apps together for just $12.70 - that's worth it even if they DIDN'T work! ;-)

I "sort of missed" the special, due to my hastiness in trying to find a utiliy to compare folders and tried to get the discount on just the Compare Folders purchase; the transaction, needless to say, didn't work, after buying Compare Folders and resolving my issues, I went back to look at Drive Guage and think that I'm going to go ahead and buy it even though I won't get the discount. It's only $5, so...

Overall, a developer who produces nice applications and has a good philosophy about everything (go through the whole site if you have time); deserves our support.
