4Peaks ReviewGood stuff - Version: 1.6, 7/28/2005 02:37PM PST

Much nicer than ABIView for looking at and analyzing our sequence data. OSX native also makes the program very nice to use. Tons of features, recommended to my whole lab (those that use Macs, that is). And it's free!

A superb, stable product. We'd like to see additional features, but it's a wonderful program, overall.

Once again, a nice improvement over the previous version - printing in particular has been greatly revamped and is much better than it was in 1.1. Motif and sequence searches within your trace and the ability to mark particular selections are particularly nice.

Having used it for a while now (v1.1 mostly) my main criticism is UI related in that window size and set-up for a file is not preserved between sessions. Also with this new version, parameters such as the marked residues and the chosen frame are also not preserved between sessions though, according to one of the developers, this is apparently more to do with the desire to preserve format compatibility with other apps (a completely new 4Peaks only format would be required otherwise).

version 1.1 improves the responsiveness and speed of the app greatly on my iMac 400MHz. Good job!

I have a feature request though: The text to speech capability is nice and really useful, but it is a bit crappy due to the TTS engine of MacOS X (compared to the AT&T engine, that is). And I couldn't get it to pronounce the four bases in Spanish (not even sounding like Spanish). So my request is simply that one could use four arbitrary sound files (recorded by the user if he/she wants to) representing A, C, G and T.

4Peaks Developer NoteIdentified issue opening ABI files on MacOSX 10.2 - Version: 1.0, 2/9/2004 09:00AM PST

mekentosj
Dear Versiontracker visitors, Unfortunately, we have identified an issue with opening certain ABI files on macs running Jaguar. This bug will not form any risk to your files, but certain ABI files will not open or produce strange drawing effects when opened. The same files will open properly on macs running MacOSX 10.3 Panther. We are currently investigating how to repair this bug and we will post an update version as soon as possible. Sorry for the inconvenience, Mek & Tosj

4Peaks ReviewOne less reason to startup Classic - Version: 1.0, 2/9/2004 08:54AM PST

Bye-bye EditView. This is more than good enough as a replacement, and the ability to run an NCBI BLAST search (via your browser) from a context menu option from this app is very useful. Sometimes a little sluggish to redraw the sequence after editing and zooming, but I am only on a 400MHz iMac.
