JFC ReviewBaaad with fonts - Version: 1.20b5, 9/15/2006 01:35PM PST

I used JFC for Windows extensively, and seeing a port for Mac OS X was a rather welcome suprise, and its free price even more exciting.

The software works, as long as you do not want to tinker with it. Unfortunately, the first thing I want to change in software like this is the fonts it uses.

Despite what the readme says, JFC for Mac OS X deals very very very badly with fonts:

With its default settings, it does not show accented latin characters at all, and shows a nasty square instead.

Assuming it was because of the default font being used, Osaka, which apparently does not to have the full latin-1 character set (even if Apple apps such as TextEdit do not seem to care about this and show those characters using alternate fonts if typing with that font; still JFC does), I tried to change it to any one of the Hiragino family.

The preferences do have a Fonts tab. Selecting it, though, stalls the application and your only option is to force quit. You can access the fonts settings as long you as you have all but the bare minimum deactivated, since it will choke depending on what fonts (not how many) you have activated.

I tried to detect a pattern on what kind of fonts make JFC cough, but it just seems totally random. It is fine, for instance, with any of the bundled OS X dfonts in /Library/Fonts activated BUT with Hoefler Text. Beats me.

Still, all of this is pointless, since once you get to the Fonts settings, the drop down list is empty!! Yes, it is, even with all Hiragino family or MS Japanese fonts activated!!

Whatever the cause is, it is NOT a matter of defective fonts. They have been checked and rechecked and are all perfectly fine. Besides, the fonts on my system are only the ones that come bundled and installed by big common apps such as iLife, MS Office or Adobe CS.

It is NOT, either, a matter of my system being corrupt, since I have tried it in two machines. They did have in common running Mac OS X 10.4.7 with all software updates localized into Spanish, that otherwise give absolutely no problems.

I use this in conjunction with the Rosetta Stone Japanese software (for learing the spoken lanauge) and it works quite efficently. This does work i dunno what problems poeple are having.

I really like the feature when you double click a character it gives you the definition.

Very good interface follows the standard and has all the niceties that a program should.
