Product Description:

Unison is a carefully-crafted, genuinely revolutionary Mac OS X Usenet newsreader. It offers all the expected newsreader functionality: easy-to-navigate threaded discussions, the ability to ignore annoying posters, multiple signature management, and easy, Mail-like posting with spell checking and all the trimmings.

But it also goes much, much further than any other Usenet client on earth, starting with a unique four-view interface that lets you view and work with Usenet group content in four distinct styles: messages, files, images, or music. It lets you preview MP3 files directly off a Usenet server, view images in an elegant iPhoto-like thumbnail view, prioritize transfers with a flexible downloads manager, find favorites quickly with a categorized column-view interface, smartly group files into meta-groups (like songs into albums), show download status beautifully in the dock, and much more. Phew!

What's new in this version:

  • Fixed issue switching to File or Music view in Mac OS X 10.5 Developer Preview ("Leopard")
  • Fixed problem with bad timer causing endless redrawing on Leopard
  • Fixed linking problem preventing Unison from launching on Leopard
  • Previewed items are now automatically removed from transfers window when preferences says they should
  • Downloads should now have progress bar when resumed from a previous error
  • Cache folder rearranged for easier clearing
  • Changed "Empty Image Cache" menu item to "Empty Preview Cache"
  • Unison no longer deletes /Application Support/Unison/ if prefs file missing/corrupted
  • Connections now close themselves after inactivity
  • Added command-option-w keyboard shortcut to close all windows
  • Fixed potential crash when changing system date format
  • Previewed songs are no longer cleared from cache when you switch to another song without stopping
  • Now reconnects and resumes if we get a timeout while loading headers

Unison ReviewUnison is really, really good - Version: 1.8.1, 11/30/2008 02:55PM PST

After struggling with Thoth for years -- it just would not run properly on OSX versions, and got worse with every version, I decided to try Unison. It was either that or give up usenet altogether. Downloads are easy and complete! It works the way a client should! AND it makes use of nzbs. One click on your nzb and you are good to go.

The only thing I would change is the way that filters are handled. I would like for them to be not just highlighted, but sorted to the top of the page, prioritized. The kill filter did not seem to work at all though.

It's totally worth the price. I just love it.

I would like to echo what a previous poster said and state that this is the best newsreader for Macs hands down. Fast and easy to use.

I used to use 1.8.0 and the SSL crashing bug used to drive me crazy, but after downloading 1.8.1 it works like a dream now.

On a side note, has anyone managed to get it working through a proxy/SOCKS setup? Just curious as I heard it is possible...

The program is a little pricey, but it is definitely worth it.

Cheers!
S.

A free trial that stops working unless you pay for it is not shareware. It's a free trial for COMMERCIAL software.
