I am a registered user of v2 and just updated to the Lite version and, as a result, I have LOST functionality. So I would have to pay again for what I already paid for the app to do... Interesting concept.

They will not be seeing any further upgrades from me.

CodeTek VirtualDesktop Lite CommentaryI'll wait a while - Version: 3.0, 2/9/2004 01:39PM PST

In fairness, let me say that I consider version 2.x an absolute essential product. I've been running it for the better part of the year, and it has made my working environment far more productive and less cluttered and confusing. But that's what I have, not the upgrade.

The information here (and also on the developer's home page) mixes new features with existing features, making it difficult to be clear about what's really new (especially since I don't now use all features in version 2.3.11 and therefore am not familiar with all of them). One of the main complaints I have with the 2.3.11 version is that one must quit CTVD first (before quitting a program that uses multiple "desktops" and even then, it frequently fails to remember which window goes where when the program is re-launched. That makes it annoyingly time-consuming to re-organize many windows from scratch. It's nice when sometimes it works right, proving it can work, but frustrating when it doesn't. I'd pay the $15 upgrade in a heartbeat if that were fixed once and for all, but there's nothing in the What's New info to suggest that's the case. Guess I'll wait a while. But if you're new to this product entirely, you'll probably find 3.0 a great boon and well worth the forty bucks.

Personally, I'll wait a point revision or two for things to stabalize before installing.

if you follow the link to the developer page, you can see for yourself that this is all beta software, and it's fairly apparent that they haven't decided how much to charge. in fact they're asking for feedback. you might try taking this comment and emailing it directly to the developer; it looks as if he'd be happy to hear from you.

CodeTek VirtualDesktop Lite CommentaryUnfortunate Development - Version: 3.0B5, 1/21/2004 04:34PM PST

It's unfortunate to see a highly regarded product split into two branches -- with two sets of code to maintain and with QA and testing requirements essentially doubled. It seems to me this is a "solution" in search of a problem. I can see a "standard" and "pro" approach with an office productivity suite (in which additional components can make up the pro edition); but this excellent one-note utility doesn't lend itself well to being forked in this way. I think it may make for more headaches than what it's worth to the developer.

Also, no mention is made here on VT as to the main distinction between the lite and pro products, nor what the pricing will be for the lite product. Yes, I could download a "Read Me" file, but why could not CodeTek provide a URL which details these things?
