I didn't like Pith Helmet, but at least it was free.
-- Not loading files of a particular size will only eliminate those larger than specified! Usually large graphics are images i want. It's the small ones that are usually annoying ads i want to toss.
-- Blocks all Flash content, or No Flash content. These days there's plenty of content other than ads that use Flash. Definitely needs to be on a per item basis.
-- Blocks all javascript or none. Totally unacceptable given that zillions of sites require Javascript to function properly, but often use it to write ads as well. Per item basis is a MUST!
-- Other blocking strictly by domain and the list has to be edited in TextEdit and reloaded? Ridiculous. I could use Privoxy or Style Sheets if i wanted that kind of tedium.
-- Also breaks function of many sites.
This is entirely inadequate and too inflexible. Adblock for Firefox is infinitely better, and a free extension. SafariBlock does almost as well for Safari. Looks like i'll be staying away from Camino et al, for a while longer. )8^(

PitHelmet may do blocking based on regular expressions, but SpeedManiac works with any browser that supports proxies, sets the proxy settings automatically, has an internal list of 1600 ad hosts and does not brake safari when safari gets updated. A hot key can be used to turn it on and off and SpeedManiac also optimizes downloads for maximum performance.

- Upgrade doesn't work for me
Obviously this program raises certain issues, the freedom of users to block ads and the way web sites actually make their money which is through advertising. If you feel like trying this program then great, it does remove a lot of ads on web sites and gives you a choice of when you want to see ads. For people with dialup connections this can be a huge difference on their internet experience.
A proxy server is not an easy thing to do, it is actually a very complicated piece of software and SpeedManiac has features like DNS caching using multi-node B-Trees, tight code for speed, 40 simultaneous threads, removal of graphics that meet a certain criteria as set by the user, auto re-sizing of buffers according to file type and
server speed and much more.
When reading reviews, consider the source and any possible reasons behind a terrible review. Decide for yourself.
