Product Description:

Wormhole2 is for audio professionals and musicians, allowing routing of audio between machines on a network. Now you can make use of all the un-used processing power in your studio. For example; set aside a machine for complex instruments or effects, route audio out to it, then back into your favorite DAW. Or route audio between your PCs and Macs to get the best of both worlds. Or share audio between laptops on stage. Or or or... there are lots of possibilities! Demo downloadable.

Features
  • Audio Unit and VST plugin for Mac OS X and VST for Windows
  • Transmits audio over TCP/IP
  • Super Low Latency on a LAN
  • One 44 kHz Mono Channel requires 175 kBit/sec
  • Works with any Network Interface (Ethernet, Firewire, Airport)
  • Works with any Audio Units host such as Logic, Garageband, Cubase, Live, Digital Performer, Soundtrack, Metro, ...
  • Can be used on a single machine to send audio between applications or to send audio between multiple computers.

Compared to Tigers built in "AUNetSend" and "AUNetReceive", Wormhole2 is crossplatform compatible, significantly less latency and auto compensates for latency and can sync multiple instances.

Wormhole ReviewYes, this is useful, even with 10.4 - Version: 2.0.4, 6/19/2006 12:34AM PST

Even a year after the release of 10.4 almost no sequencers natively support AUNetReceive. There are things like Bidule that support it and can be used as a VST plugin, but that is even clunkier and more expensive.
Wormhole is great for sending a few audio tracks over Ethernet. I lost the use of an audio card when I switched my old computer from OS 9 to X. Wormhole was far cheaper than a new audio card, and it works with very low latency. I've never had a problem, but I have never sent more than 2 stereo audio channels at once.

Since 10.3 MacOS X has been able to do this out of the box with the "AU Lab" Application included with the developers tools to configure MacOS X to Send and Receive raw audio or even encrypt the audio during transport using a passkey.

But if you need cross-platform network audio transport this maybe what your looking for.

Do we really need this on tiger?

Apple includes several Audio Units in Mac OS X, including [...] a matched pair to stream audio over a network.http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/coreaudio/

.

OK, no VST ;-)
