PDFpen ReviewProvides functionality beyond Skim and Preview - Version: 4.1.2, 5/12/2009 08:04PM PST

Bud Simrin
Despite an earlier reviewer's complaint that this app is overpriced because Skim and Preview have most of its features, I find that not to be the case. I use Skim and Preview a lot, but I use pdfPen when I need to add or delete or rearrange pdf pages in an extremely Mac-friendly environment. I use it a lot to insert or replace pdf pages I create in Word (using SAVE AS pdf). Also, when I fill in forms using Skim, the text disappears when I reopen the file with Preview or even Skim I believe, but the text filled in from pdfPen "sticks" no matter what app next opens the file. So, when I need to reuse filled-in forms, I rely on pdfPen. I also like that I was able to scan in my signature and save it as a pdfPen object for easily inserting (with resize capability to make it fit) into forms. I do find text creation and editing in pdfPen clunky compared with, say, Word, but I suspect that this is just the nature of pdf editors in general.

PDFpen ReviewTry the demo first. - Version: 4.1, 3/12/2009 04:54PM PST

This sounded perfect for filling in the forms I currently use Acrobat for. I find Acrobat slow and clumsy. The demo was unable to fill in any of the simple forms I use: on the government forms it couldn't fill in the check boxes, on my work forms the pop-ups didn't work and it filled every field in the form with the text from the last field edited and on the form I made myself in Acrobat it couldn't seem to see any of the fields at all, so I couldn't test whether the calculated fields worked. I'm so glad I didn't buy a license based on the description of its features.

Sounds perfect but it was totally buggy and useless.

PDFpen CommentaryPriced way too high, should be $10. GREEDY developer. - Version: 4.1, 3/3/2009 03:54PM PST

This app and its big brother PDFPenPro, are wayyyyyy overpriced. Considering that so much of PDFPen's and PDFPenPro's functionality are available for FREE in Leopard's Preview and a freeware app called Skim, this should really cost only $10, and PDFPenPro should be $20. At $50 and $100 this developer should be ASHAMED.

It allows to cleanly edit, sign, annotate any pdf document. Rock stable for me (iMac 3GB RAM with 10.5.6). The new OCR feature is an excellent idea too: needs improvements.

I open a PDF form, fill in Page 1, go to Page 2, and then PDFPen crashes. Have tied over and over. Have restarted the computer. Tried removing Page 1. Still crashed.

A long time user of 'smileonmymac' software. Pagesender has been excellent piece of software that does it's job. I have tried many different pdf editing apps and always come back to pdf pen. It is intuitive to use and has a friendly 'smileonmymac' logo lightly imprinted on the demo versions work. I highly recommend it.
Thank you 'smile on my mac' folks.

PDFpen ReviewBeware Purchasing Too Soon - Version: 3.5, 9/18/2008 01:51PM PST

Having purchased within 6 months, and being generally unhappy with this buggy software, I was more than disappointed to find that they want a $25 upgrade fee from me so soon. I would suggest waiting until they get the kinks worked out before purchasing.

Downloaded, installed, tried, opened a PDF, made some scribbles, saved the PDF. Then tried to open the PDF in another program. It said the file was corrupt.

Then PDFpen went in the trash

PDFpen CommentaryWaste of Money - Leopard's Preview Does Everything This Does - Version: 3.5, 7/22/2008 01:56PM PST

PEOPLE! You really must check out the capabilities of the new version of Preview that comes with Mac OS 10.5 (Leopard). It does everything this app does BUT IT'S FREE! Why would anyone pay for this junk? Also, try Skim - another freeware app that does everything this app does.

Man, these developers have some nerve charging $49.95 for this -- $49.95 for God's sake! I wouldn't even pay $5 for this.

Are we all just suckers to you developers?

This crap is nothing but highway robbery.

I have just received a special offer from SmithMicro for this product. Is it the same or are they selling a competing product by the same name?
