NeoOffice CommentaryPatch Update does not work - Version: 3.0.1, 11/28/2009 06:52AM PST

Steezito
I installed the early release of NeoOffice 3.0.1 because of the new features of Snow Leopard.. There have been some difficulties, such as failure to properly refresh the screen and eventually complete freeze-up. I find that I need to restart it every couple of days or it slows down progressively and screen updates fail.

Since this is an early release, this is to be expected, but when I tried to install the patch, it fails because it says that I need to have 3.0.1 installed.

NeoOffice CommentaryPatch 7 => Many crashes... - Version: 3.0 Patch 7, 8/11/2009 02:01PM PST

Yesterday I tried to patch NeoOffice, which is by the way a very good program and I use it a lot, and the patch failed to update. It was patch 6.

Then I installed version 3.0 from scratch, because patch 6 messed up the program, and I was getting a message that patch 7 was out. So there was something wrong with patch 6 like I've thought and experianced...

Anyway, I installed patch 7 with succes and now NeoOffice (patched to 7) crashes almost all the time on startup... Sometimes the program starts normal after 6 or 7 crashes and works normal?

I believe this patch 7 is a quick fix for patch 6 and that a patch 8 will follow very soon because something is wrong with the last two patches (6 and 7).

So for the moment I installed a clean 3.0 again (works like a charme on 10.5.8) and I'm waiting for patch 8.

Again, NeoOffice is one the programs I'm often use and Iove it!!! So 5 stars from me!!!
It's always possible that something is going wrong during an update, we are only humans and we all make mistakes ;-). So no harm done, I'm still a big fan of the NeoOffice Project and all the great developers!!! Thanks a lot for the effort, the great program, etc. !!!

Greets.

NeoOffice ReviewIntel NeoOffice 3.0 thumbs up vs. OOo 3.1 - Version: 3.0 Patch 5, 7/12/2009 11:01PM PST

I've always been wary of NeoOffice on a purely emotional level - lots of bad vibes re: their splinter from OOo but push has come to shove now and it's bad news for OOo. 3.0-3.1 was their big splash Mac native version, but it doesn't behave well for me... when dealing with even the smallest of graphics in documents (tracers when moving an image, a delay in image rendering from the time you release the mouse button until the image appears in its new position, makes precision difficult). It opens slower than NeoOffice. I get too many beach balls (even if OOo is the only app open and the first one loaded right after start up, so not a memory or CPU issue on my computer).

NeoOffice doesn't have any of those issues.

Yeah document format exchangeability is still buggy, in both Neo and OOo, but that's actually now Microsoft's fault - they (seemingly) purposely withheld the appropriate specifications to allow interoperability seamlessly after agreeing to a standard to use, using the excuse that the standard everyone agreed to was not well defined. But M$ only brought that up AFTER the fact when it was too late to fix, when they supposedly knew about it during development.

Finally decided to remove from my system for now. The last simple document I prepared for my team, all Windows users, was rife with format issues in tables that hid data from view. I had to continually open the document in MS Word just to ensure fonts and formats. Finally finished the edit in Word. If that's what you have to do, what's the point?

BTW, I found that Pages was much better at exporting to Word providing consistent results.

Spreadsheet is another area. My company uses scripting extensively. Keep getting runtime errors when loading company spreadsheets.

Neo is not a bad effort, just not ready yet in my view to use as an outright replacement for Office where everybody (almost) is using it.

NeoOffice CommentaryLast resort for PPC crowd - Version: 3.0 Patch 5, 6/26/2009 07:09AM PST

I applaud the development of this OO.o variant. It's the only one still under active development for the PPC users (and thanks to the high cost and high quality of Apple gear, there's still plenty of them) so we/they are not left in the lurch as other developers leave a good chunk of the Mac crowd behind.

I needed a solution to replace my older Office Suite and decided to give NeoOffice a try: This product is just excellent, with a nice concept, is fully compatible with all MS.Office files and is stable and ... cheap! Highly recommended.

NeoOffice ReviewAqua Done Right - Version: 3.0 Patch 2, 5/6/2009 05:57AM PST

Although OpenOffice.org offers a sort-of aqua (read: "glossy button") version, NeoOffice is lightyears ahead with Mac support, without sacrificing compatibility.

Version 3.0 from Neo is about 20 times faster at startup than the OOo version, and supports much more MacOS goodies. NeoOffice CARES about the Mac, and it shows. There's just no reason to get the OOo "Aqua" version, unless you miss your Windows PC or are a masochist...

Way to go NeoOffice! My only fear is that since OOo is trying to offer an Aqua version (no doubt inspired by Neo -- they wouldn't bother otherwise), that NeoOffice might go by the wayside. OOo, no offense, but leave Macifying to the pros! :-)))

NeoOffice Troubleshooting ReportUnable to install NeoOffice 3.0 PPC - Version: 3.0, 3/31/2009 08:31AM PST

Installation went part of the way and then stopped and the error message: "Install Failed. The source media you are installing from is damaged". I tried downloading from 2-3 alternative mirror sites, with the same result.

I was able to install version 2.5 and the latest patch again without issue.

This is on a G5 dual 2.5 PowerMac.

I also downloaded the Intel version 3.0 and was able to install that on a MacBook without issue.
