Logitech Harmony Remote ReviewWorse than last version for me. - Version: 7.5.0, 9/13/2008 06:56AM PST

t2lek
I've always struggled to like this software. Logitech make probably the best affordable all in one remotes in my opinion but their software stinks big time. Upon installing this latest update it told me there was an update for my sky+ box PVR so I downloaded it thinking it would make the functionality somewhat better. Not only were the settings much worse than what was previously available it removed all of the previous settings so I could not revert back. I'm now stuck with having to use my sky+ remote to control the thing as the Harmony remote doesn't control it at all now. I also now find that the software will not update the remote once i've changed the settings and i've used 2 different macs, 2 Windows PCs and the alternate web interface without any success.
I hope Logitech fix these issues fast by bringing out a new update otherwise I may consider selling my Harmony 1000 remote altogether. I've had it since it first came out and although the remote looks mighty fine it is dog slow and not intelligent at all. Don't get me wrong, I was willing to put up with it's many faults as the last version of this software was in my opinion about the best it has been so far, but this latest update has destroyed any credibility that the team behind this software may have earned from me.

Logitech Harmony Remote Usage TipIncompatible with Java 6 (64-bit) - Version: 7.5.0, 9/2/2008 11:05PM PST

emiliosic
For all of you that get a black screen when starting this app, the issue also happens with the previous version; at least to me.
This application uses Java and it's not compatible with Java 6 (64-bit for Intel Mac).
A workaround is to open Applications -> Utilities -> Java -> Java Preferences and make J2SE 5.0 the default Java VM for both applications and web pages.
I had other Java apps behave strangely on Java SE6. There are several changes on this release and older java apps might no longer work. This is a general issue with Java 6 and it's not specific to the Apple port.

Logitech Harmony Remote ReviewWhat's the fuss? - Version: 7.5.0, 8/27/2008 04:21AM PST

I'm as happy as anyone to moan and point out when something doesn't do what it is supposed to, but..... I downloaded the latest version onto my Intel mac running 10.5.4 and everything works fine! I couldn't be more pleased with the product or the software. If in doubt, try it.. it comes with an uninstaller.. and you can always revert to a backup so long as you have made one!

Logitech Harmony Remote Troubleshooting ReportTry this...it may help - Version: 7.5.0, 8/9/2008 05:32PM PST

I had already ran the update before anyone had posted comments here and just never used it. Now that I decided to read the comments, I found the same issue. It came up first asking if I wanted the autoupdate and a "NO" answer says the app will quit. I chose to let it go automatically. Why? If not, then the app will quit so why bother asking? I think the developers at Logitech are smoking crack.

Anyway, after it fired up, I too got the same blank window. I closed it, checked the prefs, of which there isn't much there worth a darn. Then clicked over to my desktop, all while the Harmony software is still running. Then I clicked back to it, Harmony, from the Dock. The window appeared as I hoped and I clicked in it right away. I am not sure if that click, or just reselecting the windowless app, did the trick but I got the login screen and it seems to be working now.

I still agree with you all that this is the worst piece of software, ever! It is in no way user friendly, easy to use, flexible, fast, ... need I go on. Logitech used to be a Mac friendly company that had good products supported by the Mac. Lately, it seems as though, they have "given in" to the Bill Gates line of thinking that its all about money and who cares about everything else. So they promote the "Windows" environment and leave out the Mac. Funny as it seems, Microsoft has better Mac support than a lot of companies. I am a Microsoft "HATER" by the way.

Try out what I did and see if you get to use your software to program your remote once again. Hopefully Logitech will REDO this app to a real Mac app.

Logitech Harmony Remote ReviewThis is a disgrace - Version: 7.5.0, 8/9/2008 03:45PM PST

Full Score
This latest version has clearly not been tested on a Mac. Using OSX 10.5.4 on an Intel-Mac it won't even boot correctly - an empty window with a black background. Logitech can't even have opened the application on an Intel-Mac before releasing it.

I've manually removed the following files and re-installed:

Applications/Logitech Harmony Remote Software
Applications/remotecore

Library/Preferences/com.logitech.harmony.plist
Library/Receipts/core.pkg
Library/Receipts/logitech.pkg
Library/Receipts/RemoteControlUSBKext.pkg

~/logitech folder

~/Library/Application Support/Logitech folder
~/Library/Preferences/com.HarmonyRemote.client
~/Library/Preferences/com.logitech.harmony.plist
~/Library/Preferences/Harmony Remote.plist

(I can't find any hidden files that need to be removed.)

Same result. Worse, I can't even go back to my previous version (7.4.x) as it tries to force me to update the software before displaying the splash page - refusal to do so quits the app.

Worse still: each time I've gone through the above exercise I've lost my bluetooth connection to my Apple keyboard. I've then had to run DiskWarrior to fix the problems caused by the Logitech installation. I've done this twice so I know Logitech is the sole cause.

What a terrible company. Before Logitech took them over our Canadian friends had done a pretty good job of supplying Harmony software that worked. Now, although I'm told it's the same guys doing the programming, they have clearly been told to focus almost entirely on their Windows users and ignore the Mac.

A terrific product has now become a pain in the neck.

Logitech Harmony Remote ReviewDo NOT use the 7.5 update; has major bugs!! - Version: 7.5.0, 8/9/2008 11:27AM PST

Logitech is still batting .000 when it comes to making software that works with a Mac.

Do NOT download this update; it will lose your login and password info. In a phone call with Logitech they agreed the software was improperly tested and has bugs. The directed me to a web site http://myremotesetup.com that supposedly does what their software does, but does it over the web using standard protocols and not using some poorly programmed piece of garbage that stores file fragments all over your hard drive and tries to push Ethernet down a USB pipe.

Good news is their phone support is excellent even on a Saturday no less and if the device actually worked as advertised, it would be great. The features are all there, but the implementation is being done by Windoze programmers who are not Mac programmers and it shows.

As such, I must give this release a 1 star rating until they release a 7.5.1 update to fix the bugs or decide to go to a web based interface permanently.

For such an expensive product, it should just work flawlessly and it has never actually done that. Once it's programmed, it's adequate, but getting it programmed is a nightmare on a Mac.

What's wrong with those people, why the *beep* do they scatter their files and folders all over my Mac in such a redundant way...?!? Will they ever clean up their act...?! I don't want to have two Logitech remote apps, combine them into one package...!!! I don't want to have several Logitech folders on my Mac, put your stuff into one folder and then move it to Application Support or somewhere else, out of my sight...!! Is this really so difficult...?!?

Logitech Harmony Remote CommentaryMust reiterate my warning - Version: 7.5.0, 8/8/2008 07:36AM PST

The quality of the Logitech Harmony Remote's hardware is shoddy, and the buttons will begin to fail right around the time your warranty expires. So figure on their warranty period as the lifetime of the product. Their support is aloof on this matter, so don't expect any help there. The software was at one time pretty good, but if they now say they "don't support Leopard," it suggests that they are out of touch in that area too these days. Proceed with caution and calculate the cost vs. the lifetime of the product and potential frustration.

Logitech Harmony Remote CommentaryAuto Update - Version: 7.4.1, 2/25/2008 05:32PM PST

saronian
Looks like version 7.4.1 performs an auto-update of some components and now lists the version as 7.4.3. It also lists some of the recent update changes in the Harmony app main window. The main application still shows as 7.4.1 in the Finder but some components have been updated.

The two home folders, "browser - logitech" and "logitech" remain a part of this utility, which is a bit sloppy, but everything is working with my 520.

Note - One of the updates is listed as "Better paring with the model 1000"
