Product Description:

What is it?

After the Mac OS X 10.3.2 update, the 12" PowerBooks fans were made to come on at a much lower temperature. Before the update, the fans would come on when the topside CPU temperature reached 148 degrees F and they would turn off after the fans had cooled the system down to 138 degrees F. After the update, the fans come on at 125 degrees F, and turn off after cooling the system down to around 116 degrees F.
Why is this important?

The 12" PowerBook Rev. A operates at around 125-130 degrees F with normal tasks (browsing the web, ichatting, and checking your e-mail). Apple's products are one of style and aesthetics. Having a whirring fan takes away from that. This installer will bring your PowerBook back to the silence it once had.
What does the installer do?

This installer replaces the AppleADM103x.kext and the AppleADT746x.kext with previous versions that keep the fan at it's original settings. This installer has only been tested with a PowerBook Rev. A and there have been no known side effects. Use at your own risk though, as this was put together by a non-professional. If it does alleviate your problem, enjoy the silence.
It didn't work for me, what can I do?

Don't worry, it didn't work for me the first time either. Try restarting your computer and holding down the Opt.+Cmd.+p+r keys. This will zap your PRAM. It might help.

Silence is Golden

Silent Night CommentaryWhy risk it? - Version: 1.0, 12/21/2003 06:15AM PST

mhmyers
I had to select "just installed" because there is no option for "Would never install."

I have an iBook with a fan that did not go on *enough* that has had 1 fried hard drive and 2 cooked logic boards. All were replaced under the original 1 year warranty.

I cannot imagine why someone would risk overheating their powerbook. The fan is your friend.
