Product Description:

AudioRack is an audio player system for Mac OS X intended for use in live-assist and automated radio. AudioRack contains a "rack" of five players which can be loaded with audio files and controlled manually, or loaded and segued automatically under program control from a playlist (radio segues, not the iTunes style fades). AudioRack has extensive applescript support which allows it to run unattended (See the example script). I am using a similar script to run an internet stream at http://www.mountainradio.com. AudioRack is also a database front end for MySQL which can be used to organize, find and manage the audio files that it plays. AudioRack requires access to MySQL in order to run -- HOWEVER you can play audio files that are not in the database library without the files being automatically added to the library (as iTunes does). Finally, AudioRack has a separate audio playback engine (called arplayer) that does the grunt work of playing the files (any file that quicktime will play) using a 10 second long ring buffer and Apple's core-audio system. Unless your computer is really hung up, it won't glitch - even with sluggish networked audio files. As long as the network can maintain the encoded bit rate of the file over ten seconds, it won't glitch. This does NOT use quicktime's built-in (yuck) player! Did I mention that it is also an open source program so you are free to add, improve, and customize it? Once apon a time, long long ago, this was MacAssist.

What's new in this version:

  • Logs are now stored in the database.
  • Support for multiple AR locations sharing a single database with independent logs for each.
  • Players load in the background
  • Live365 reporting support added
  • Cart Stack window for holding items of interest
  • More apple script commands added
  • Added some database management features for doing group changes and browsing.
  • Added a History Window for viewing the play history of any item, artist, etc.
  • Import to database now supports Update Path for relocation missing items.
  • Import to database now reads iTunes playlist files (text format).
  • Add iTunes playlist: Add an iTunes playlist files (text format) to the AudioRack playlist.

Operating System Requirements:

This product is designed to run on the following operating systems:

  • Mac OS X 10.3

Additional Requirements:

  • Mac OS X 10.2.x or later (tested on 10.2 and 10.3) and access to a MySQL database server
  • May work on earlier versions of OS X, but I have not tested it.

AudioRack ReviewLooks easy... but needs MySQL DB installed - Version: 2.5b2, 1/20/2006 06:28PM PST

Perhaps this is not as daunting as it appears to me, but having to install a MySQL database seems like a lot of work. I had hoped this might be a good application to use to run cues in a theatre from a Mac, but installing the DB seems to be a bit more than the average user might want to try.

So i will not rate the software, but do hope there is a way to use it w/o the DB (maybe it could read the iTunes library directly?)

But it looks like the features are all there. If I get more time on my hands, I'll try again and install the DB. I needto know more about that. It seems Adobe is the only product on my Mac that has an MySQL DB at the moment. <sigh>.

I just tested the program and it seemed to work with WAVs for me. Maybe some kind of QT mime is missing on your system? Overall a good program
