xPad ReviewExcellent and thank you... - Version: 1.2.6, 2/4/2009 06:00PM PST

Smitty610
Thank you to the developer of this software. I am using it on a MacBook Pro, Mac OS X 10.5.6. It works without a problem. It works beautifully from the services menu of Safari. I select the part of the page I want to copy and 'Open selection in xPad'. It immediately (no delay) opens, gives it a title and saves it. I am then able to print, edit, whatever I might want to do. The privilege that it is freeware is also appreciated.
Sincerely,
Ralph

xPad ReviewUS Date Format - Version: 1.2.6, 11/20/2008 12:15AM PST

rsashby
The date gets added automatically to the side bar but there is no way to change the default US format. How about adding Day:Month:Year and Year:Month:Day options.

xPad ReviewWhat a wonderful little program - Version: 1.2.6, 1/11/2008 05:12PM PST

Akopman
I've been looking for a simple replacement for the old classic notepad for years. I've tried them all. Most notepads are too ambitious (slow, with steep learning curves) or too simple with ugly interfaces. xPad gets it right. I use iOrganize for keeping track of my life (passwords, serial numbers, misc). But xPad now sits on my dock as an essential utility. It opens instantly, and is a great place to store misc. pieces of text etc.until I can organize them more formally.

Many thanks to the creator.

xPad CommentaryMaking Bulleted and Numbered Lists - Version: 1.2.5, 7/5/2007 10:29AM PST

As for the person who said you can't make bulleted or numbered lists in xPad, there is a work-around (though it's not automatic; you still have to type the bullet or number on each line):

  • Press alt-8 (makes a round bullet in most fonts) or enter the first number.
  • Set a tab where you want text after bullet/number to begin.
  • On the next line, move the left margin triangle (the lower part of the margin guide) to the same distance that the tab was set. This is a hanging indent, and subsequent lines of text will wrap to that point.
  • You can apply this throughout the document with "copy ruler" and "paste ruler" or you can save it as a style: (1) Select (highlight) the line where you made the hanging indent. (2) Press "Styles" in the drop-down menu at the top, then select "Other." (3) Click on "Favourite Style." (4) At the prompt, enter a name for the favourite style (call it "Hanging Indent"), and from then on it will appear in your "Styles" menu.

xPad ReviewI love this app! It's just the right type of notepad. - Version: 1.2.5, 7/5/2007 09:08AM PST

The xPad notepad is the best of both worlds. It has a TextEdit interface that is unobtrusive and that opens as quickly as stickies, yet it allows you to organize your notes by titling them, assigning a user-defined colour-coded subject to them, and providing a sortable index of them. If you're a student, a writer, or anyone who grabs snippets of info or quotes from the web, you will love this. It also makes a great scratch pad for jotting down ideas when they come to you so you can place them in their proper file/directory later. Or you can save it as a repository for all notes for which you need a quick reference. For instance, I have one note that shows keyboard shortcuts and quick tips for OS X (things I would otherwise forget, like how to access the menu without the mouse), another note keeps track of my contest entries.

  • The database of all your notes is stored in your home Library/Application Support, which makes backup easy.
  • Another bonus is that you can give each note a distinct appearance by choosing fonts, font colours & sizes, highlighting, paragraph formatting, etc., just as you would in TextEdit.
  • A brilliant and most convenient feature is the "Copy Ruler" and "Paste Ruler" in the Text menu, which allows you to easily copy paragraph formatting (indents, tab stops, spacing, etc.) to other areas.
However, I'd welcome the following in future updates:

  1. search and find across all notes and note titles.
  2. automatic bullets and numbering.
  3. ability to sort note titles in any order by dragging and dropping in the title drawer (a good alternative to hierarchical notes).
  4. hierarchical notes (just 2 levels) but only if custom sorting (above), which I prefer, can't be implemented - an expandable triangle next to main notes in the title drawer; anything the user designates as a sub-note to a main note would appear underneath it (e.g., user can create a main note named "Contests" and sub-notes named "Publishers Clearing House" and "Lottery" under it)
However, the last three are just "wish list items" that I would only like to see IF they don't add to the current free price and IF they don't bloat or slow down the app. xPad as it is now is pretty darn near perfect. Many compliments to the developer for a job well done.

xPad ReviewNo Spotlight support; no Lists; no SEARCH - Version: 1.1, 10/20/2005 10:07AM PST

mattjal
Unfortunately, XPad hasn't been updated to work with OS X Tiger's new "Spotlight" feature - a real problem, since you can't SEARCH all your documents!

There is no support for bulleted lists.

This is feeling like a half-baked note taking application.

If you need a fully-functional notes and writing application, this is not it.

xPad ReviewClean, simple and very useful - Version: 1.1, 8/31/2005 12:47PM PST

kopiert_dotmac
The application is really excellent. Built for purpose. Quick notes or letters that auto save, with easy document retrieval.

I had a problem with the serial number (entirely my fault) the develop (pat) could not have been more helpful or polite. One of the best £5.50's I ever have spent. This is a no-brainer app - just buy it.

xPad ReviewThanks Garrett - Version: 1.1, 8/24/2004 03:28PM PST

Thanks for the new version. xPad is my life line. xPad is one of the useful applications that I use. It is clean and simple. I have four huge schools. My iBook is always with me. xPad is the best way I have found to stay organized. Too much to keep in my head and too many scaps of paper. I love that I can sync it to my iPod. Great feature. My iPod travels with me too, especially in the summer. Great job.

xPad ReviewxPad Rocks My World - Version: 1.1, 8/24/2004 09:54AM PST

I've been using xPad for almost 9 months now. It's become a morning ritual for me to open it up and glance through my notes from previous days. Before xPad, I had notes jotted everywhere on my computer. I kept serial numbers in Excel sheets, snips of code in BBEdit, to-do lists in Palm Desktop. The general chaos has since subsided. xPad helps me to stay organized.

One of the main things that attracted me to xPad was the simple design and the ease of use. It's not bulky by any means. One could literally open the app, jot a few notes and simply leave it to it's own devices. You don't have to worry about saving your notes or putting the saved document in a well-organized directory. xPad takes care of everything.

I've never had a crash that wasn't my own fault. I've never lost a document. I've never had to frantically email the developers to figure out what x, y or z does or how to undo it. xPad is a well-oiled, fantastic application that is guaranteed to sit in my dock for a very long time.

At $9.99, xPad is a steal!
