Apple Java 3D Advanced Imaging CommentaryEssesential software but desperately needs to be updated - Version: 1.0, 5/20/2005 03:12PM PST

mlouka
This is an important piece of software for many of us, essential for using various pieces of specialised software, however it also needs to be supported. A handful of bugs including one really serious one (ie can bring down your entire graphics system -- don't try resizing a 3D view made using a ConfigureUniverse for example...) have not been fixed in the 18 months since it was released (and yes, I have reported them to Apple).

Java 3D itself has been open source for a while, but that doesn't include the Mac port so we're still dependent on Apple supporting this software. Still. they've surprised me before (by porting Java 3D at all) after I'd given up hoping...

Having said that, this is essential software for using Java 3D applications on the Mac. Just don't resize a window containing a 3D view before saving any important work you have done, in case the programmer happended to use a ConfiguredUniverse class to implement his/her J3D application!

Apple Java 3D Advanced Imaging ReviewGood for general java use. - Version: 1.0, 11/22/2004 08:31PM PST

Not only has this "update" given Apple java the ability to run Java3D Applets but I have found that a lot of regular java Applets that make their own interfaces are much fast. Much more so with Java apps like limewire.

If you use a lot of java, either on the web or on your Macs hard drive, download and install this. You won't be sorry!

Apple Java 3D Advanced Imaging ReviewJava 3d... - Version: 1.0, 1/14/2004 02:47PM PST

I found one application already that requires this Java 3d update:

• NASA's Maestro Mars exploration and observationware. See http://mars.telascience.org/home

Unfortunately it may not be a good demonstration for the Java 3d software or NASA's software is the culprit, but it runs as slow as a slug in a salt mine (even on a G4 800 MHz!)

"I think Java technology is fantastic and Java 3D deserves a lot more attention at this point.", Jaron says in The Future of Virtual Reality: Part Two of a Conversation with Jaron Lanier.

Apple Java 3D Advanced Imaging CommentaryI have been waiting for this!! - Version: 1.0, 12/18/2003 09:12PM PST

I need it. There is weather display software (IDV) that needs Java 3D in order to run. The only platforms previous to this release were Linux and Windows.

Apple Java 3D Advanced Imaging CommentarySo the question... - Version: 1.0, 12/18/2003 03:42AM PST

whytoi
So the question is who has installed it? And what have they been able to use it for? Is there any point in installing it for the average user?

Apple Java 3D Advanced Imaging Commentarynice, but - Version: 1.0, 12/17/2003 11:52PM PST

lets hope they do something better than make looking glass for Mac with this.
Except for maybe the note on the back of a window, there wasn't anything there that we can't already do today in a much more efficient way in OS X. Why would i want to look at the side of a window, that's just silly.

Apple Java 3D Advanced Imaging CommentaryMOOOOFF! - Version: 1.0, 12/17/2003 10:26PM PST

This allows authors to write Java apps now for Mac that can use 3d graphics and do advanced image editing.. and for us to run them.. Score one for rapid application development for Mac! Java now will have advanced support for both OpenGL and Quartz if I read the info correctly on this a month or so ago..
