Apple G5 Firmware Update Commentarythanks quintessenz1 - Version: update, 11/18/2005 02:20AM PST

usarian
your problems were similar to mine. I have 10.4.2 but reverted to 10.3.9 because the problems with 10.4 made the machine unusable (10.3.9 just about usable).

looks like its worth me upgrading to 10.4.3 and applying the patch

Apple G5 Firmware Update ReviewFinally! Fixed PPPoE/SystemUIServer troubles on my G5! - Version: update, 11/17/2005 01:44PM PST

Ever since I bought my G5 1,8 GHz I had to fight with constant inaccessibility of PPPoE after 2 hours, rendering the complete SystemUIServer process stuck. It is documented in the relevant Technote by Apple (see link list below). It was a pain to use the machine, as other side effects occured like not being able to properly reboot or shut down the machine in those periods. Read the support thread for a full description of the problem. All this is fixed now with this Firmware update. I used the 10.4.3 version of this update, worked with no problems. It's only sad it took almost a year to get this fixed.

Support thread on mymac.ws (third post is mine):

Apple G5 Firmware Update Usage TipSoftware Update - Version: update, 11/16/2005 04:52AM PST

When in doubt, just use the built-in Software Update function on your Mac. It knows what updates your Mac is and is not eligible for, and will prompt you for any firmware updates your Mac needs. You do not need to download the update and attempt to install it manually. As well, if you try to install a firmware that is not compatible with your Mac, the installer will prevent you from doing so.

I wouldn't download this - too risky. Much better to use the auto new software for your computer thing in the apple menu.

Apple G5 Firmware Update Usage TipNever Install Firmware When It First Comes OUT! - Version: update, 11/15/2005 08:57PM PST

Never Install Firmware When It First Comes OUT!

Many times firmware is applied to the wrong type of computer and it will sometimes cause you to lose your drive/info and make serious problems with your mac.

Always wait a few days for people to review the firmware before you download and install something that will ruin your month, or year.

I learned my lesson about firmware updates with Apple.

If it aint broke, don't fix it.

Your Messed up Macs may need to be sent back to Apple now.

Someone needs to figure out a better way of reporting these. There is a 1.8GHz Power PC G5 600MHz iMac. This update is not for them apparently.

The previous reviews are for an earlier firmware update. Sure, Apple should have started a new product page on VT for this product. The other reviewers probably haven't even installed this version.

This firmware update is NOT for the Dual 2.0, it's for the single processor 1.8. Read, people. I hope you haven't damaged your systems, but you might have.

Apple G5 Firmware Update Troubleshooting ReportCauses freeze/high fan behavior - Version: 5.1.8f7, 11/18/2004 07:29PM PST

After applying this update to my dual 2.0 GHz machine (June 2004), my machine has twice locked up -- black screen, fans on full tilt.

Both times, I have been away from the system, so the exact behavior is not exactly clear. Prior to applying this update, I never experienced a similar crash.

Hopefully this will not continue to be a daily occurence.
