CodeTek VirtualDesktop Pro ReviewGood: Beta for Intel Mac now available. Bad: Doesn't work. - Version: 4.0b1, 6/28/2008 01:52PM PST

I downloaded the Intel Mac beta and installed it (it required a reboot), and tried to launch it. After a dialog asking for my admin password and telling me to relaunch, nothing else happened. The system logs and crash logs tells me there was a major crash because of "unsafe use of @executable_path".

CodeTek VirtualDesktop Pro CommentaryCTVD 4 universal binaries will be released soon - Version: 3.2, 1/26/2008 12:00AM PST

I have been in email contact with the developer and they say that "CTVD 4 universal binaries is in the final stage of development and will be released soon." So, rejoice! no more buggy "Spaces."

CodeTek VirtualDesktop Pro Commentarycrying "real soon now" wolf - Version: 3.2, 1/26/2008 12:00AM PST

We've already been told to anticipate a significant CTVD update several times before, then months (which now total up to years) go by and it never appears. Unless I see direct evidence from the developer to prove CTVD 4 really exists and will be released I'm not going to believe any rumors about it. And CodeTek might as well make CTVD free because it must be hard selling a product with its development history. I certainly wouldn't recommend anyone buy it regardless of how good a product it is unless CodeTek finds a way to earn back long lost customer loyalty, which is going to be difficult since they've made no effort to sustain it over the last several years.

CodeTek VirtualDesktop Pro ReviewProduct at a dead end - Version: 3.2, 5/14/2007 12:31PM PST

Looks like it's time to move on. I've been waiting for an update to VirtualDesktop for almost a year now to fix very minor glitches. It doesn't work on Intel macs, there's no working support email address for the company any more, and there's no user forums. I'd be wary of spending money on this product.<p>

The only feature that differentiates it from freeware solutions (like Virtue, which I use on my MBP) is a visual view of your desktops, so you can drag and drop windows between them.

Argh...

I just tried to write an email to "Dear Mr. Goldstein" (looks like he is the only Dude there working, because "support@codetek.com" is the same email address in the end as his...) and I almost loughed loud when I instantly after sending the mail got an error reply from his postmaster.... the email account is not anymore active! Great news!

For all of you waiting... like me... keep waiting as now I am almost certain that this product is dead (and 40 $ lost).

Also, people which are still using PPC, watch out with Adobe CS3 products cause the bindings are not working correctly with VirtueDesktop Pro 3.2.

Version 4 looks to be "Vaporware".

Really a sad story, such a great prodcut now depreciated.

CTVD USERS: With the new releases from Apple (Sept 13), CTVD Pro dies within a few seconds after starting. This occurs if you have installed both Quicktime 7.1.3 (from 7.1.2) and iTunes 7 (from 6). We are looking into the problem to get a fix asap.
The latest versions of CodeTek VirtualDesktop and DockExtender run with Mac OS X 10.4.4 and lower. CTVD 3.2 also runs with Mac OS X 10.4.7 PowerPC machines. CTVD and DockExtender do not run well with Tiger 10.4.5 or higher on MacIntel machines. We are currently working on a new universal binaries version of CTVD Pro. This version will be CTVD Pro 4. To have your email address added to our early CTVD Pro 4 notification email list, or to file a bug report, email us at goldstein@codetek.com.

As soon as CTVD Pro 4 is released for beta testing, we will begin work on DockExtender v4, a universal binaries version. To have your email address added to our early DockExtender v4 notification email list, or to file a bug report, email us at goldstein@codetek.com.

Also, please note that with the release of CTVD 4, we will no longer support CTVD Lite. Any User who is registered for CTVD Lite should email us at goldstein@codetek.com and we will send you a CTVD Pro license at no additional charge.

Finally, we will no longer support CTVD 2.x.x with the release of CTVD 4. If you are using CTVD 2.x.x, you may Upgrade to CTVD Pro 3.2 by going to www.codetek.com/php/upgrade.php and following the CTVD Pro Upgrade path. The current version of CTVD 3.2 runs with Mac OS X 2.x. Thank you

CodeTek VirtualDesktop Pro CommentaryGiven Up? - Version: 3.2, 9/15/2006 08:26AM PST

I take it the developer has given up on this product? That stinks, because this has been one of my personal favorites. The only virtual desktop program that works the way it should.

Is it time to start looking for a new but less desirable solution?

CodeTek VirtualDesktop Pro Troubleshooting ReportDid 10.4.7 break CTVD for anyone else? - Version: 3.2, 7/17/2006 05:43PM PST

CTVD quit working for me recetnly. If I try to start it, the pager opens, then it crashes after 5 seconds. I tried deleting prefs, then uninstalling, removing all related files I could find, and reinstalling, and no luck, it acts exactly the same.

The strange thing is, it didn't seem to happen all at once -- over the last couple weeks sometimes I would notice it wasn't there after logging in, so I would restart it. And if my memory serves me right, it stayed around for at least a while before crashing again -- I am sure I used it just last week while editing some digital photos. It was only the last few days where it would not work at all.

The only recent change I can think of is the 10.4.7 update.

Suggestons anyone? I'm still waiting to hear back from CodeTek, but I'm curious if anyone is using this with 10.4.7 with no problems. Thanks.
