Backup Simplicity ReviewHighly recommended - Version: 3.0.4, 3/26/2007 12:52PM PST

Ken Lanxner
I have been using Backup Simplicity for over 2 years. It works flawlessly day after day. I have been saved more than once when my primary hard drive crashed but I had an exact clone on my backup drive thanks to this software. I have complete confidence in it.

Backup Simplicity ReviewNot reliable - Version: 3.0.2, 10/23/2006 02:19PM PST

BernMac
I have used version 2.x for about a year and recently 3.02. BSIMP has stopped working on my system. The background process simply quits after about 2 hours into the backup. I have had to return to good ole Carbon Copy Cloner.

I cannot believe it is this difficult to make a reliable and fail-safe backup solution...

Backup Simplicity CommentaryNot impressive - Version: 3.0.2, 4/6/2006 08:19PM PST

I tried 'Simplicity out, but went back to SuperDuper!. There's just no comparison, and SuperDuper! is only $30.

I had been using CarbonCopyCloner, but since it is no longer under devlopment, I don't trust it for critical backups. I also tried out iBackup, but found the interface annoying and it wasn't very configurable.

Since I own a tower, price is very important to me. If I'm going to spend $50 on backup software, why not just slip in a RAID card for true backup simplicity?

Backup Simplicity ReviewWorks as advertised... - Version: 2.0.2, 6/27/2005 04:38PM PST

NO!!!!!
As a cloning piece of software I think this is a little on the pricey side - But then how much is piece of mind worth? - What you want with a backup solution is piece of mind first of all that it is going to work and work with out intervention or limited input from you. - Apps like retrospect are fully functional but to me overly so - I run several Retrospect servers and they all require massive monitoring and reconfiguration as your network changes - Backup Simplicity is just what its name states - Backup with simplicity - Simplicity being the refreshing surprise with this one - This is not just a clone app - It clones with it’s hands tied and rather fast and without fuss - The surprise it it’s other features - The backup facility is the simplicity of this app. It not only backs up your drive to a bootable state, it keeps it that way with daily updates without any intervention from you. You only have to have the computer turned on not even logged in and it will back up - The surprise feature of this app is the restore feature - You can restore a drive with one click - It keeps a history of every backup so you will only be your last backup away from a restored state - And for me the number one feature that has sold me on this cloning software that the others either lack or do badly except CCC is the ability to clone to a drive without erasing it first - This is a must for me as I often don’t want to erase the drive I am cloning to as it has data on it I want to keep - CCC dose this better than BS in my opinion but at least BS dose it - Al you have to do is move your files you wish to keep into a safe "excluded from backup" folder - Backup Simplicity is the very simply set and forget kind of backup solution I have been looking for for many years - It gets my financial contribution as this kind of peace of mind is worth the asking price for the simplicity of the backup - Might have been a different story though if the licensing model hadn't changed - I like most people like to own the software I pay for and not lease it - 2 years support and upgrades is reasonable but the president of the company could do himself a favor and send himself off to a customer relations course and learn about how the customer is always right. It’s time to update that 1980s customer service model Mr President.

Backup Simplicity CommentaryDay 6 of demo.... - Version: 2.0.2, 6/26/2005 12:17AM PST

Well after a rocky start I have been able to get this backup product to function as advertised... so far. It has backed up my boot volume as advertised. However I haven’t had a chance to test it as being the busy person I am 7 days for a demo is clearly not enough time! - Fortunately my serial number issue was resolved as quickly as you could expect from a company on the other side of the world - No fuss support provided the replacement serial number within hours of my request and allowed me to install the software and run a test backup - Even if it was 24 hours later before I could physically do this as I had to go to work - The President of the company took objection to my annoyance at the hoops I had to jump through and frustration at an over zealous process for a simple 7 day demo and basically told me to go jump! _ Clearly this company is not client centric but did supply a replacement serial number even if a bit or attitude was attached to the serial # e-mail - Now I just hope I can get a chance to test the backup features of this software as I am now in day 6 of the 7 day demo... Only 66 GB to go!

Backup Simplicity CommentaryNot off to a good start.... - Version: 2.0.2, 6/20/2005 05:28PM PST

I find it hard to believe this company is serious about it’s products... I am a potential new client willing to pay over $100 for a product that is currently available for similar features for free or at a lot less and my first experience is not good. First they want me to register for a demo... well OK if I Have to... Then the URL for the Demo doesn't work... OK not a goo start... So I down load the product from VT Run the installer and it asks me for a serial #.... My 7 day Demo serial number has arrived by email within 30 seconds... thats good... Oh dear Serial Number not valid .... that’s bad.... click down load demo button ... it wants me to register... just did that and got a bad down load url and a serial number that isn't valid... not a goo start... e-mail sent off to tech support requesting a resolution... but I have just waisted 20 minutes of my time and I have lost the momentum... it looks like this company is going to be too hard to pay them money for a product I cant appraise... back to Carbon Copy Clone or SuperDooper... better luck next time.

Backup Simplicity Developer NoteBackup Simplicity license has changed - Version: 1.1.4, 1/2/2005 01:05PM PST

The license terms for Backup Simplicity were changed in April 2004. Licenses purchased after the release of Backup Simplicity 1.1.3 on April 4, 2004 allow the software to keep working for as long as the customer wishes.

Like licenses for our other products, new versions and technical support are available at no charge for a period of two years after the purchase of a license.

Licenses purchased before April 4, 2004 must be renewed before the new license terms apply.

Backup Simplicity ReviewGoodbye Backup Simplicity - Version: 1.1.4, 1/2/2005 08:34AM PST

My copy of Backup Simplicity stopped working because the license expired, as intended by the vendor and as I agreed to by paying for the license. I originally decided to give the vendor's licensing agreement a try because I liked the product. Now that I have experience, I am convinced that this is an inappropriate model for consumer software product licensing: even if you never want updates or support, the original software will stop running.

Please note that the vendor's choice of licensing policy is my primary source of dissatisfaction with this vendor and this software. Since the most effective message is voting with the pocketbook, I've decided not to pay for an additional license but will instead move to a different vendor's product that is as effective but with a reasonable license and use policy (probably SuperDuper!).

Over time the marketplace will sort out these issues and I give credit to the vendor for trying an alternative model. But I hope that they abandon it in favor of more consumer-friendly policies.

Backup Simplicity Developer NoteSaves your old files - Version: 1.1.4, 8/25/2004 02:09PM PST

(2 of 2 users found this comment useful)

Qdea Tech Support
When you check "Keep a history of old versions of documents in the 'Users' folder", Backup Simplicity stores files that would be replaced or deleted inside a special folder called History. The files are organized by backup date, preserving the original folder hierarchy. They can be searched using the "Find" command in the Finder.

If the backup disk doesn't have enough space for files that have been added to the original disk, files are automatically deleted from the History, from oldest to newest.

So when this feature is enabled, if you backed up on March 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th, you can retrieve the version of a file from March 1st although changes may have been made to it on 2nd and 3rd - as long as the file was stored somewhere in the 'Users' folder.

You can also use the Finder to search for that file within the History folder, and get a list of all versions of the file, and when they were changed.

Backup Simplicity CommentaryMisleading - Version: 1.1.4, 8/22/2004 06:24AM PST

I think that some of these comments are somewhat misleading:

Quote:
"You don't want to worry about the intricacies of Unix, like what the heck Psync or Ditto are or do."
With CCC, you don't have to worry about the intricacies of Unix. All the installs are just basic installs from a disk image.

"You want to be able to talk to someone knowledgeable for support if you have a problem."
CCC has a very good support system and forum.

"You like a log of your backups, and you like being notified if there is ever a problem."
CCC keep a log of your backups too.

"You like the idea of updating your backup with only the files that have changed, instead of recopying every file every time."
CCC does this too.

"You want to be able to retrieve a file that was inadvertently deleted, or you want to be able to go back to an earlier version of a file."
This does seem a good feature not in CCC if I understand it correctly. So with Backup Simplicity, if I backup on March 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th, then I can retrieve the version from March 1st although I made changes on 2nd and 3rd. Is this the case?
