VISE X CommentaryInstallers are still around in 2007? - Version: 3.2, 1/8/2007 12:04PM PST

If you need an installer for your app use Apple PackageMaker instead, it's free... BTW drag and drop rules.

VISE X Troubleshooting ReportCan't uninstall VISE X - Version: 3.0, 7/22/2006 11:14PM PST

Could somebody tell me how to uninstall this thing?
You can't move it to trashcan because there are associated filetypes (.vct).
The installer can only install, there are no uninstall (perhaps they think you'll never want to uninstall it once you've tried it)

Somebody help!

ps.
Mindvision states on his wesite: "VISE X is quite simply the best software installer for the Mac OS X, period!" :))))))))))))))))))

VISE X ReviewI despise this application - Version: 3.0, 7/4/2006 05:12AM PST

Here's a suggestion: it could ASK THE USER FOR PERMISSION before KILLING ALL HIS APPLICATIONS. And how about having the uninstaller actually uninstall all the crap the installer put in there? The installer generator should make it harder for developers to make user-hostile installers.

Developers! Please, please build your installer the OSX way. Download Adium, see how they did it. Your users will thank you. If your lawyers tell you you need a clickwrap license, you can add that to the dmg file, or have it shown the first time the application is started.

VISE X Reviewoften used to produce bad results -- who to blame? - Version: 2.0, 5/31/2005 02:30PM PST

VISE seems to make it remarkably easy for developers to build bad installers; even big-time developers, who should know what they are doing, for some reason produce VISE installers that quit all your apps, wreck your permissions, don't have proper location options, hide the locations they touch, etc.; i've never built an installer with VISE, so i don't know exactly how much to blame VISE and how much to blame developers, but it seems obvious that VISE is a tool that can too easily produce a bad result; i have sometimes resorted to AppleScript to force a VISE installer to install without quitting apps

VISE X ReviewThe happiest day of my life ... - Version: 2.0, 5/31/2005 02:18PM PST

... was when we convinced my university to let us drop VISE for our Mac software package. In truth, VISE has a lot of really great features, and it can create very flexible installers, but even those cannot save it from the absolutely puke-inducing interface for the installer creator and the bugs that riddled the software when I used it. The VISE installer creator is a prime example of what happens when developers do a lazy Carbon port.

It simply has way too many roots in Classic, and that results in a lot of confusing installation rules. You actually have to COPY AND PASTE a Unix shell script into a tiny little window to add that capability, for Christ's sake. You can't just select a text file.

Whenever a developer uses a VISE installer, that's automatically a strike against his product, in my opinion. If you've designed your product so poorly that you need to use VISE instead of Installer.app or drag-n-drop to get it installed properly, that's a sign of an application which will give you problems down the road.

VISE X ReviewDevelopers please stay away! - Version: 2.0, 5/31/2005 11:01AM PST

As a user, I have also found these things are nothing but trouble. Nearly every time I've used these, they either unintentionally required Classic (which I don't have installed) or mess up the permissions.

One of these installers literally wasted a half day of my time.

I vastly prefer the standard packaging mechanism and would urge developers to use that.

I really, really hate these installers. So far, I had nothing but trouble with them, so I'd prefer this software to vanish as fast as possible.

What's the advantage of Vise over the standard OS X installer? As an end user, I don't see any, maybe there are some for a developer?

VISE X CommentaryWhy?! - Version: 1.5, 1/7/2005 06:04AM PST

Apple provides a great installer (via installer.app) with a ton of free support and advice for all developers. It may be a hassle to some people, but I like it when the Apple installer optimizes my hard drive. It keeps my Mac lean and fast. As a developer, by using Apple's installer, you are also insured that your application can be installed regardless what version of Mac OS the user has.

It totally boggles my mind why anyone would use a third-party installer. And, yes, it does make me nervous to see someone using Vise as their installer.

I'll stick with Apple's native installer. It just makes sense.
