Product Description:

RealZoom is shareware. It generates a somewhat realistic zoomed (close-up) image as if you are taking a close look at your LCD, CRT screen, or paper with a magnifying glass. Available zoom types: RGB stripes, RGB dots, LCD, Trinitron (Aperture Grille), Shadow Mask, Video (interlace), Black Print (K=0 and 45 degrees), and Color Print (CMYK=0 and 63.4 degrees). I hope this is a useful image utility for graphic designers, graphic artists, and for anyone to help understand how images are reproduced on LCD, CRT, and paper.

NOTE: RealZoom generates a very large image when the original image is large, and the system may not be able to handle a very large image properly. Please make sure to select a portion of (or scale down) your large image and save a smaller image with your image editing application such as Photoshop, then load the small image with RealZoom. Thanks.

What's new in this version:

Added more "Black Print" (black ink on white paper) and "Color Print" (cyan/magenta/yellow/black inks on white paper) zoom types. Still requires a lot of memory if you select one of the high magnification zoom types such as LCD (15x) and Shadow Mask (16x), and load a relatively large image such as an entire screen shot (e.g. 648MB for a 1152x768 screen shot) or a high resolution photograph (e.g. 2GB for a 2048x1536 photograph).

Operating System Requirements:

This product is designed to run on the following operating systems:

  • Mac OS X 10.3
  • Mac OS X 10.2

Additional Requirements:

  • Mac OS X 10.2 or higher
At least 512 MB of RAM

Gives a whole new edge to showing 'zoomed' CRT images easily without making complex Photoshop masks. We've just completed a website for a CCTV company, and I painstakingly had to re-create 'screengrabs' for illustrative purposes. This would have saved me ages... This is both easy to use, and instant... you can see what your tweaks are doing.

And as for the 'pseudo-halftone' paper effects, top marks! As a designer, it's sometimes necessary to use zoomed halftone effects, and this method makes a mockery of Photoshop's own built in filters. Very convincing, and very quick—considering that no less than a year ago, we had a feature project which was to show on an exhibition panel the difference between halftone and scatter printing! This would have made it easy!

The way the LCD/CRT effects emulate RGB makeup is superb. In fact, aside from a few technical aspects (one of them being the inability to cap the resultant filesize at a reasonable level) I will be recommending that we add this to our studios.

One 'heads up' for the developer, and one 'rotten egg' for those uneducated and uncreative grunts whom wish to criticise this app... come on guys, when you 'bought (?)' Photoshop, did you criticise all the filters and tools you didn't understand?

Applications like these are another tool in the creative designer's toolbox. And it's pure genius on behalf of the developers which allows us to use them.

RealZoom CommentaryApp or PS Plugin? - Version: 0.9, 12/8/2003 04:19AM PST

Ok, it's a neat program and all, but doesn't it seem like this would be better suited as a PhotoShop plugin?

And stop flaming; those of you that would genuinely find this app useful already own PhotoShop anyway.

Good work... I look forward to seeing this app evolve. Don't listen to the stupid people who don't understand what this app does. They obviously are not designers.
