Name those Files! ReviewThere is No Better Tool - Version: 2.1.2, 11/13/2007 05:58PM PST

NTF has many options on how you wish to batch your files; more than I've been able to use, but they are there nonetheless.

This developer is responsive and writes other excellent software apps like Jon's Phone Tool, among others.

Name those Files! CommentaryA better tool - Version: 2.0.7, 2/21/2006 10:05AM PST

for this sort of job is "File List" <http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/27090>

I tried a dozen tools including Name Those Files before settling on File List. The interface ain't all that lovely but it works fast, intuitively and bug-free.

Over the past 5 years I have taken 12,000+ digital pictures and this app has saved me a ton of time in organizing them (not only renaming them but sorting them into folders by date). Earlier versions were slow (though still faster than my manually doing the work it does) but this last version is MUCH faster. I don't love the interface but it works and I guess that's what counts. I know I don't even use all of its features (GREP is beyond me) but what I do use has certainly paid for itself many times over.

Name those Files! ReviewProblems renamig iPhoto files - Version: 2.0.6, 1/7/2006 02:20AM PST

Be careful if you want to rename files once in the iPhoto folder. The application doesn't recognise them, so you are in a trouble.

Jon's software is so well done, well priced, and a pleasure to use. This app certainly takes the headache of renaming, organizing, and referencing files. Great for the project minded individual who insists on being anal-retentive.

I just tested "Name those files 2.0" and I love it!!
Though I use File Buddy 7.6 to batch rename files and folders, it's a good competitor for doing things like this.

...and the user interface is ease to use and intuitive!!

While R-Name is terrific (and free!), Name those Files! has some features not found in R-Name including, but not limited to:
  • The use of an external text file to use as the rename key
  • The ability to skip a file but retain the sequential numbering of a counter (or multiple counters) [I can't get R-Name to reliably skip a file if its checkbox is "unchecked"]
  • The ability to sort files into date-based subfolders
  • The ability to sort the rename order based on creation date, modification date, or size (R-Name only lets you do this when numbering sequentially, not for every type of rename)
  • Profiles that let you instantly recall your complex rename parameters
  • Complete mix & match of all the rename types (prefixes, suffixes, search & replace, trim, case conversion, numbering, etc.) at once where R-Name requires separate rename batches for each one
  • The optional adding the original name to the comment field as well as an easy way to revert renamed files if this option is enabled
  • A much more intuitive interface
R-Name, however, is faster and supports folder names & recursion. Still, the additional features justify the small registration fee for NtF!

tubadood,

I'm sorry you're having problems with the application. Can you elaborate on what went wrong? This application was thoroughly tested on a variety of machines by several users before it was released (and has been downloaded nearly 1000 times) and this is the first I've heard of it deleting a folder. There is no delete code anywhere in the application and it never modifies existing folders (new folders may be created if you enable the sort into date folders option via the preferences) so this is quite puzzling. Unfortunately, the speed issue is a caused by the fact that this was developed with AppleScript Studio and AppleScript is not as fast as other development languages.

Idea's good, implementation is slow and risky. Make sure you're renaming copies of files - this app inexplicably deleted an entire directory when it had a minor problem with one of the file names. Be warned.

There are free utilities out there that may not be as robust in features, but I haven't had problems this severe with them.
