LaCie Update Tool ReviewWatch your step... - Version: 2.0.1, 6/28/2008 05:57AM PST

I tried this version on a d2 triple interface (dual drive) enclosure. Yeah,... bricked! It was attached to a 2002 Quicksilver via FW400, and while the updater gave me a "thumbs up, you have the right hardware to use this on," the results spoke differently. When it finished, I got the dreaded "The drive attached to this system is unreadable... yada, yada, yada." I then hooked it up via FW800 to my Powerbook, and got the same notice. Then I changed to USB with the Powerbook and got a notice "The drive you have attached has limited accessability. Please back it up and reinitialize" - or something to that nature. Since I had data I wanted sitting on those drives, I got out another d2 case and put the drives in that one...surprize!... they worked fine! So...it looks like this update is a crapshoot.

Ps... I put 2 new drives in the bricked d2, and all it does is continuously flash the light quickly no matter what interface I use, and Disk Utility can't see it.

Ran the LaCie Update Tool 2.0.1 on three LaCie d2 drives connected to both Intel and PPC Macs. One machine is running latest Tiger, the other two are running 10.5.3. Some of the drives were partitioned, and one was not. I had NO issues wiht this tool.

Adding to my prior post. The latest Lacie Update Tool can be found by running the older (bad tool) and accessing the "Check for updates" with the main menu of that tool. Takes you directly to the LaCie download. Hope this helps. Save me a lot of grief.

Well... My brand new LaCie disk was bricked by version 2.0. After several attempts I "discovered" a newer LaCie Update Tool 2.01 just posted at LaCie. Behold! It fixed firmware and finally properly applied the firmware update and successfully mounted the drive. All prior data seems to be intact.

Even if your drive was trashed try this new updater. Good luck

LaCie Update Tool CommentarySorry if this is too late - Version: 2.0, 6/7/2008 03:50PM PST

Learn by my past mistake. I tried to update the firmware on my LaCie disk, it failed to load and in doing so, turned the drive into a door stop. LaCie didn't want to know, even though the drive was still in the guarantee period. If your drive is working, don't try to upgrade the firmware. If you do and it breaks the drive, you most probably have not lost any information. I eventually dismantled my drive when LaCie disowned it and mounted the drive in a third party casing. It worked perfectly.

My advice, buy Western Digital.

I "updated" a 320GB Big Disk Extreme with this downgrader and it is now a doorstop! It will not mount, System Profiler will no longer see it. It is totally fried. Thanks LaCie!

LaCie Update Tool Troubleshooting ReportDrive won't eject from desktop - Version: 1.4.2, 9/1/2007 09:50PM PST

After applying this firmware update the drive won't dismount from the desktop when I trash it. I've run Disk Utility and a couple of third party apps (i.e. TechTool) to check the drive for errors and it's ok.

LaCie Update Tool CommentaryExplaining it YET AGAIN... - Version: 1.4.2, 5/10/2007 10:40AM PST

(3 of 5 users found this comment useful)

Andreas..
Two people have just written that their firmware wasn't upgraded to 1.4.2. I have written, and Mike @ lacie.com has written that:

a)  The version Nº of this Tool (1.4.2) has nothing to do with the version Nº of the firmware that any drive needs.

b)  The firmware version needed by drives differs one from another. If you use this Tool on 3 FW drives they might each report needing and being updated to different versions of firmware.

c)  What matters is running this Tool until it says "no update needed". If it says that the first time you run it then that's it! Don't waste space here to say that it said you don't need an upgrade - it's really not interesting.

The 1.4.2 Update tool determined that my firmware needed updating.
I ran the update.
All OK.
10.4.9 with all updates on an eMac PPC.

LaCie Update Tool Troubleshooting ReportStill shows as 1.02b - Version: 1.4.2, 5/9/2007 10:33PM PST

I tried the version the other night and now the 'corrected' version tonight, May 10th. However, both times, it says

"LaCie Update Tool foun a FireWire drive "LaCie Disk" but it doe NOT need updating. (The firmware is already at v1.02b)

So, even this update is supposed to contain version 1.4.2, it will not update version 1.0.2b.

Anyone else having this problem???
