Kevin HoctorWhen you give too much control over your website layout in a WYSIWYG editor (ie with iWeb), you get amateurish, slow, unprofessional websites.
RapidWeaver combines the best of both worlds, giving you the ability to customize the look of your website while making sure it looks professional, organized and clean.
I think RapidWeaver is the perfect choice for people who want to get a personal or small business website developed quickly, easily and inexpensively.

ed TakkeniWeb does not do drop-down menus. Though recommended by an Apple store rep, RapidWeaver doesn't really do drop-down menus either. It looks like it does at first, but it gets two things wrong that make it unuseable. 1) The top menu that pops up the pull-down must implement a link. 2) The drop-down menu text headers word wrap after only 22 characters. Also, drop-down menus are impossible to find in the RapidWeaver documentation.
I told RealMac about these problems in version 4.2.1, but here in version 4.2.3 the problems still persists. So there is no reason to spend money on RapidWeaver when free iWeb does everything else better.

Scam offer - Version: 4.2.1, 3/19/2009 01:11AM PST

HettyAfter I entered my order (after having added some extra costs, something like guaranteed download in case of need to reinstall; UPS shipment if chosen would cost about $50), I wanted to pay for it, but neither the creditcard option nor the PayPal option were accepted by them. Their customer service was weird too. I first thought this was a phishing site, but they assured me it wasn't. If their own software doesn't work properly, then their products can't be promising.
So I guess this offer was just a scam.

RapidWeaver vs. iWeb

SitupstraightRapidWeaver's template feature works much the same way as iWeb's. However, iWeb templates have much more variety. RapidWeaver's templates all look quite different, but on closer inspection you realize that they all have a similar format, a column for the text and a sidebar for the links. (You can purchase third-party templates, but I'm talking about the ones that come with the program.)
The templates in iWeb have much more variety, with two, three or four columns, pictures, etc.
The advantage of RapidWeaver's approach is that you can change your mind about what theme you want to use at any time, and your website will reformat perfectly (or almost perfectly). If you make changes to an iWeb page, such as rearranging pictures or other elements, and then switch to a different theme, the new theme may look jumbled because the elements are no longer where the program expects them to be.
However, I think this is a minor advantage, because once you settle on a theme you're not likely to change your mind anyway, unless you're very indecisive.
RapidWeaver is modal; you edit in a word-processing-like screen and then you must click a button to see a preview. iWeb is more interactive and real-time.
RapidWeaver does support a large number of third-party add-ons to help overcome some of the program's own limitations, but then the complexity of the program goes up.
In addition, I have identified a number of bugs in the latest version of RapidWeaver that make it too annoying to work with. Therefore, I must give the nod to I Web.

macoptions2The boilerplate templates may get you something useable but if you want to have a different look or feel, look elsewhere.

VersionTracker should update RW's price

SomebodyOf course, the price is for RapidWeaver itself, without taking into account additional expenses for Themes, Plugins, and other Add-ons.
At $79, two superb alternatives are Sandvox Pro or Freeway Express.
RW is certainly better than iWeb, but that's not a difficult accomplishment. Although I have licenses for RW 3 and 4 since it came bundled with other programs, it is definitely not something I would buy for $79. I would not even pay $50 for RW. No wonder it's often offered as part of bundled packages.
Sandvox is more tempting, especially with the current 20% off sale from Dec 10 to Dec 24.

A review of an older version of Sandvox:

One of the best things about RW is the community, but I'm disappointed with the software itself and their customer support.
I use Dropbox to store my files so I can access the files from both my computers.
