Product Description:

A plug-in for the Apple Mail application to generate serial mailings (mail merge, bulk mail) from a template email message using data provided by an Address Book group. The script will process the message body of the (selected) template message and replace certain tags by their corresponding value from the Address Book for each recipient. You may use custom data by specifing your own labels in the "related names" section of the persons Address Book entry (e.g. "Assistant", "Customer number", etc.) and the script will replace the corresponding tags by the corresponding Address Book values (Example: Use the script to inform students of their score (and other stuff), which is stored in AddressBook).

The program supports almost any of the data fields of the OS X Address Book, including user defined fields. The template rules are also applied to the subject line (so you may generate custom subject lines).

Rich Text (HTML) emails may be created - just create the template as rich text message (and select rich text as default for mail composition in Apple Mail's preferences panel).

Attachments and inline images may be added by using a tag that specifies the corresponding file.

See http://www.christian-fries.de/osx/SerialMail for a definition of the tags.

Serial Mail ReviewNice, but certainly NOT a business-class solution - Version: 3.10, 12/8/2007 06:06AM PST

Serial Mail seemed nice and simple and it probably is, but it is not a business-class solution. It can't include sender name in the "To:" header, it is quite slow (for large amounts of HTML messages) and relies on Mail to send messages. I had to adjust Mail settings and even them my HTML message I have prepared in Mail lost part of its formatting (i.e. it did not turn in the plain text, but things like indentation were lost).

After purchasing it and playing for a while I found out that I can't really use it for sending a well-formatted letter to a large number of customers. (Again, if you use it for a smaller number of recipients and/or if you use plain text and/or don't need names to appear along with the recipient's address, it may be Ok for you.)

I finally bought Mailings which costs $25, you can try it out for free without limitations (except a time period), and it's actually simpler to use and gives you a more complete and reliable solution. That's a product actually worth its cost.

Dear Sir,

Wondering if you are going to update your fine Serial Mail program for Leopard...

Charles

Yes. I will try to fix the Leopard incompatibilities. Serial Mail currently works only if you select "Text only" in Serial Mail preferences. But you lose formatting and attachments then.

Serial Mail Troubleshooting ReportImprovement for multiple email addresses - Version: 3.10, 9/30/2007 06:47PM PST

For some of my contacts I have stored multiple email addresses. In "Adressbuch" (German for address book) you can set for each group which address do you like to use for each contact (using the menu "Bearbeiten, Verteilerliste bearbeiten..."). Unfortunately, this tool doesn't care about these settings and just send the email to the standard email address of each contact (mostly "Arbeit").

The tool should also writes the full name of the person in the "To" field of the email (something like "John Smith <john.smith@xyz.com>"). This can help later on if you want to find emails you have sent to a certain person.
