STAY AWAY FROM THIS PRODUCT

I tried this product last year, bought a license, and thought it would meet me needs for a simple clone utility.
The bottom line is that MimMac totally destroyed by entire hard drive, rendering the data unrecoverable -- even after spending $500 with a data recovery service.
The software author was entirely unresponsive, and offered no counsel or assistance WHATSOEVER. He did not respond to email or attempts at telephone calls.
The software does make bootable clones. That's not in dispute. The problem is that the interface is so poorly designed that it is unclear whether one is restoring to or from a particular drive. There is virtually no error checking to prevent users from catastrophic data loss.
I do not make comments like this cavalierly or in an attempt to harm the developer. I have been an advanced Mac user since 1985, have worked for Apple as a systems engineer, and made a living as a software developer for years.
You'd be much better off with Super Duper.

No problems with MM registration.....!!! - Version: 1.9, 4/11/2008 12:50PM PST

I own 2 copies of MM which were activated on different hardware. I wanted to re-activate on my current hardware. I contacted the developer via email and got a reply within 10 minutes to try my re-activation (which BTW was successful ...)
So yes.... It took me 1 min of effort to contact the developer.... 10 minutes later, I was registered.
Unlike the rant above ....which must have taken 10 times the effort...
And I agree.... with the previous comment.... "lecturing the developer" ...hilarious!!!

Prior to MimMac, I used Dantz Retrospect and Synchronize Pro X. Synch Pro X was good, but it's also very pricey. In addition, I had to set up half a dozen different backup scripts to accomplish what I can do with one script in MimMac.
I've been using MimMac for about 7 months and haven't had any problems or issues. I have one licensed copy on my home MacBook and another on my work MacBook. Every day, I run MimMac when I leave home and again when I arrive at work. It just works.

Some guy lower down is praising Benjamin for the 19 emails to resolve licensing issues. Frankly I'd be really pissed off at him for wasting my time. It looks like my turn has come.
Well, I've had to reformat my hard drive and MimMac is refusing my serial number (via the obnoxious esellerate engine). Contact MimMac support they say.
If every program I had demanded that I contact the developer on a reinstall, I'd have to quit my job and play full time tech support to these developers and computer.
This kind of pointless hassle is the best argument for FOSS and Linux.
Benjamin - get a clue.
You priced your software right. Legitimate users won't pirate it at this price.
So make it easy for us. Use a less hassle-intensive license scheme.
I will actually look for other backup-sync software. I recommend you do the same.
Of the candidates, Sync seems to be most free of this heavy handed licensing hassle. Do not, I repeat, do not go anywhere near spyware Synchronize!Pro X which actually installs background parasite-ware on your computer every time it runs.

Wonderful Software

Version 1.8.9 works seamlessly with Leopard. User-friendly and intuitive, with all the features you need to do simple as well as complex back-ups. One great feature: Mimmac lets you save different types of back-ups you do regularly, so you don't have to repeat the same commands every time you use it. A great time saver, very smart. MimMac comes with a very clear help and get started guide. It works quickly and effectively. A very trustworthy back-up utility. Highly recommended.

I have two essential folders on my PB: Current Projects which I sync daily to my dot-Mac volume, and a big Documents file that I archive quarterly with Apple Backup. For the daily task I have been unhappy with FoldersSynchronizer, which is slow and insists on copying irrelevant files. (Users should make up their own minds about FS -- it's not a bad program.) I looked at the available alternatives, and liked what I saw about MimMac. I tried the trial version, it synched perfectly in a few minutes -- VERY fast, and with no errors. I did have a question about the interface (my only MimMac quibble), and author Benjamin Timm at Ascendant Softworks answered it quickly and accurately. Superb support, and kudos to Ben! At Ben's suggestion, it's best to list all your source/destination syncs in the Main Window (I have 4 each day), then name them ALL as a single set. They will load automatically if you choose, and then you can sync one or all, as you wish. I haven't tried MimMac's bootable clone feature, but that should be a superb attribute. I understand that Ben plans an interface update that will help the GUI. But as I say, that's a small quibble. This program and it's multiple options appear to work without a hitch. I'm a very satisfied customer, and only $10 poorer for the experience.

I bought MimMac on 10 March and had problems activating the app, which refused its (legit) Key number. I emailed support@ascendantsoft.com and got a prompt reply from Benjamin Timm. He suggested a fix. Did't work.
We exchanged 19 emails, over a period of 6 days. Benjamin remained patient, courteous even, at all times, and kept coming up with something new to try. He eventually found something that worked for me.
I expect--and get--support like this from the likes of Adobe, when I bought Photoshop, which is painfully expensive.
Benjamin gave me the same quality of support for a little app for which I had paid $10.
You gotta like the guy!
The app now works as advertised. Yes, it does backups, quite nicely, too.

MimMac also handles packages well (iPhoto, Aperture generate packages into the hundreds of Gigabytes), treating them as folders so you only have to update the files which have changed not the whole database (minutes instead of days of copying).
MimMac is the only affordable high quality sync tool available on OS X. SuperDuper! is the way to go for volume backup but SuperDuper! doesn't handle folders or partial drives well and won't do two way syncing at all.
MimMac and SuperDuper! are a killer combination though.
I've since bought another license to support the developer's efforts with MimMac, despite our rocky start.
What's even better is the licensing scheme will be changed so that your license will continue to work even if Ascendent Softworks disappears (hopefully not!).
All that's left on my wishlist for MimMac is dry run preview of two-way syncing.
