Product Description:

After sporadic reports of data loss and corruption with FireWire 800 devices operating with the new Mac OS X 10.3 "Panther" operating system, Apple Computer made an official press release to indicate this problem has been traced to Oxford Semiconductor's 922 Firmware used by nearly all FireWire 800 devices, including the OWC Mercury Elite 800 series.

No OWC Mercury Elite FireWire 800 product has a firmware version lower than v1.02, but it is our recommendation that you follow the enclosed link to our v1.05 firmware update page. There you will find the the instructions and software which will enable you to upgrade your OWC Mercury Elite 800 drive to the latest v1.05 firmware version.

Apple Computer, Inc. is working with Oxford Semiconductor to fix this problem within OS X 10.3 Panther in a way that would not require the later Oxford 922 firmware version, but we here at OWC are happy to provide the firmware update information as an immediate and total solution regardless of what Apple and Oxford may do in the future.

Please make note that this issue has only affected a small number of customers but we take this issue very seriously and highly recommend that all customers update their drive's firmware revision.

OWC Mercury Elite FireWire 800 Firmware ReviewWorks - you need latest JAVA update to run this! - Version: 1.0, 11/2/2003 07:18AM PST

I've just finished updating all my enclosures (2x IceCube 400, 1x Sarotech FlexHDD Combo 2.5", 1x Maxtor 160 GB, 1x NewMotion 2.5") - one thing to note is that the activity light of the Maxtor doesn't work any more, otherwise it's fine.

Also, ONLY ONE DEVICE PLUGGED IN AT A TIME (got to say this as clear as possible...)

OWC Mercury Elite FireWire 800 Firmware Usage TipNo PCI Cards - Version: 1.0, 11/1/2003 02:27PM PST

Besides only having one drive powered/connected/mounted at a time, you can not have a firewire PCI card installed (at least an Adaptec one) when trying to run the updater. Remove your PCI card and you'll be able to update 922 and 911 drives through any ports.

OWC Mercury Elite FireWire 800 Firmware Usage TipOnly connect one device at a time - Version: 1.0, 11/1/2003 09:28AM PST

I suggest anyone trying to use this flash on unsupported enclosures read the Java Uploader v1.1 documentation at http://www.oxsemi.co.uk/cgi-bin/general/prodhome.cgi?911 (for Oxford 911 enclosures).

To Levon River: Only have one enclosure attached at a time. The flasher cannot let you select which device (if there's more than one connected). I got that from the doc referenced above.

To toy2008: There are error codes referenced in the doc above. You might find out more about the error you were getting.
