Feux ReviewFleamarketware - Version: 1.0, 10/18/2003 12:50PM PST

Xapplimatic

Normally I give a little more generous scoring for freeware, but the author's claims as to this being 'realistic' are completely baseless.

  • Every explosion is the same size.
  • Every explosion is the same type (multi-colored only.)
  • Every explosion is silent. i.e. how many shows have you seen with no sound?
  • The mortar shot going up is exagerated in size and brightness (white). Not smooth either even on a G4 with no other apps running.
  • Segmented presentation. Most shows have one shot going up while one explodes.
  • Isn't compatible with the Preview window (ie you don't see it in the Preview really because the author has failed to scale its display size down to fit the Preview window).
  • "One size fits all" style of presentation. i.e. No user preferences available for selecting colors, sizes, or any other characteristics.

There is one fireworks screen saver on OS X however that *is* realistic, but unfortunately it's not freeware. I recommend Digital FireworX from SkyRocket Media. It's realistic (as could be expected on a computer), has audio, and can be customized. (They also have a Graveyard screensaver was just updated in time for Halloween.) See SkyRocketSoftware.com.
