Wide Screen Movie Player ReviewUseful with high resolution displays - Version: 2.4, 8/9/2007 01:55PM PST

gabrielep--2008
I found this tiny software kind of useful when you have very high res displays like i do. I have an Hi-Res 17" MacBook Pro and a 30" Dell Ultrasharp display and I use them both at the highest resolution. This sometimes causes problems when I watch low-res movies like standard 640x480 letterboxed MPEG4 that don't perform very well when viewed at full screen.
With Wide Screen Movie Player you can easily set the size of the player while keeping a nice black background that doesn't disturb your eyes.

For what I have seen the application basically creates a black windows that embeds a quicktime player that you can resize inside the container using keybord shortcuts or the menu bar. the window can be set at full screen hiding the dock and the menubar. stretching the embedded qt player have a slightly different behaviour than switching quicktime to full screen mode and i found it better. the problems arise when you try to zoom the actual content. that is pretty useless since the videos become unwatchable and out-of-sync even on a 2.4 dual core macbook pro.

the licence is definetly too expensive for what you get

Wide Screen Movie Player ReviewI don't see what all the fuss is about... - Version: 2.2, 3/22/2007 09:30AM PST

...It's a widescreen Movie Player. I have a laptop, I want to play my widescreen movies in the correct aspect ratio on my widescreen tv. Apple didn't provide me with a 16:9 resolution output for the tv, and so I need a piece of software that can stretch the image so it's correct on the tv.

Are you telling me that QuickTime Player and/or VLC do these things? Because as far as I know, they don't.

Wide Screen Movie Player ReviewI beg your pardon... - Version: 2.2, 2/25/2007 05:05PM PST

I beg your pardon, but I don't recall having posted a review of this product here yet.
Did I?
So why all the AtuGuy bashing?
And since when do we not have the right to positively review products for which we have purchased a license?
I mean, how else can we properly review products if we aren't actually using them?
And that said, I will now concur that this is an excellent movie player.
I am the owner of a very large collection of DVDs and using Wide Screen Movie Player I am able to enjoy watching my favorite flicks in wide screen mode as they were intended to be seen.
If you don't understand why wide screen is preferable to letterbox,
then I can see why you might not appreciate this application.
But if you can't appreciate the quality of Alpha Omega's products then you probably shouldn't be writing negative reviews here.
Maybe some of you took a wrong turn on your way to the forum for developer bashing?
This forum is intended for serious reviews from serious users.
Thank you

Below is the same AtuGuy and what he says about another AlphaOmega program.
He even uses the same nickname and same expression (naysayers!).
Couldn't he be smarter about promoting his own crap.

Wide Screen Movie Player ReviewUtterly Useless Garbage - Version: 1.4, 6/13/2004 01:48PM PST

This foul piece of tripe is nothing short of blasphemy. For one thing, REAL movies in REAL movie theatres are presented in their true aspect ratios. To preserve these ratios on stupidly square screens, black bars must be present. That being the case, this application is not only 100% moronic, but actually does rotten things a movie. Yes, this application belongs with the "Terror Alert Menu Bar" and other such completely useless fodder as they run for competition in "The World's Worst Software" awards, held each year at the Kodak Theatre (in deep midwinter).

it calls itself WIDESCREEN MOVIE PLAYER.....but it actually makes movies FULL SCREEN or (pan and scan-cropped) So I went to the poster store and bought a nice print of THE LAST SUPPER-but I happen to like my paintings square, not rectangular, so i cut off both ends, and now it just shows Jesus and the FOUR Disciples-two on either side of him-bye bye to the other 8 guys.

Wide Screen Movie Player ReviewWow...... - Version: 1.0, 11/24/2003 10:04AM PST

Mr. Pi
This program simply allows you to zoom in the video to get rid of the black bars on a widescreen movie, any other "features" it brags about are useless. This is NOT worth the money whatsoever. There is no point in even downloading it unless you can't stand the black bars. Then there is the fact that just zooming in on a movie doesn't really work. Since you are just getting the center of the wide view, you miss things that happen when the camera is not pointed directly at them, which is fixed when the movie companies convert a film, since they select the most important part of the frame and zoom in on that. If we watched all movies in just cropped 4:3, we would have a very interesting time dealing with half-faces and strange parts missing. If you just want to play a movie full screen then download VLC, MPlayer or any other alternative, if you really like quicktime and want to play a movie full screen the compile this code in Script Editor and run it as an application when you have a movie open in Quicktime.

tell application "QuickTime Player"
activate
present movie
end tell

Save it as an application and then simply run it with any movie open in Quicktime. Its that simple.

Wide Screen Movie Player CommentaryReturn Of The Moron (Episode XXIV) - Version: 1.0, 10/13/2003 07:33AM PST

As the other products from AlphaOmega, this one tries to rip you off your money for a poor program you can find far better (and most of the time free) alternatives on VT, for example MPlayer or VLC (the pro mode of QT will also play movies full screen).
For those not yet familiar with the developper's ways, here are a little information:
-This company (in fact, it is a one-moron operation) sells only silly or useless software (duplicating a function already existing in OSX is an AlphaOmega favorite).
-The true ratings average between one and two stars.
-The developper tried to overcome the poor ratings by posting full 5 stars reviews for all of his products, first under the name of TheFairOne, then PatrickDanielle until either the VT staff deleted them due to complaints or else he realised he was burned.
For more information, have a look at AlphaOmega other products reviews (Mouse Distance Measurer is one of my favorites, Internet Disconnector will show you how the developper sells a already OSX built-in function).
