Product Description:

With a fresh new interface, FileMaker Pro 10 delivers the most dramatic design changes in over a decade. The redesigned and customizable Status Toolbar - similar to browser toolbars - puts commonly used FileMaker Pro features, previously only accessible from the main menu, right at users' fingertips for streamlined navigation, better workflow and time-saving shortcuts.

Other major new features, such as the ability to save the results of a search, and Script Triggers, which launch scripts triggered by user actions or based on time limits, make using databases easier than ever before.

What's new in this version:

This software updates FileMaker Pro 10.0v1 or FileMaker Pro 10.0v1 Advanced to version 10.0v3.
  • DBF import and export are available.
  • Mac OS X: Addressed an issue to prevent a failure when attempting to export Excel (*.xls) without Rosetta installed.
  • Addressed an issue where an Excel file could be created displaying data under the wrong header if a field was removed using the Modify Table View feature.
  • Addressed an issue where the application could crash if you imported an Excel 2007 file that contains a copied worksheet with named ranges.
  • Addressed an issue where the Random calculation function could generate non-random values on certain machines. The Random calculation will generate values greater than 0 and less than 1. The value will never be 1.
  • Addressed an issue that causes custom functions to occasionally get corrupted during recovery.
  • Addressed an issue that causes recovery to report no issues when there are invalid data blocks in the file.
  • Addressed an issue with some SMTP servers that could lead to the BCC email recipients being shown inappropriately.
  • Addressed an issue where UTF-8 data is not being encoded correctly in SMTP mail.
  • Mac OS X: Addressed an issue where the application would crash when printing to host-based printer models.
  • Addressed an issue where saving records to PDF could crash if the starting page number was not 1 and the layout extended beyond one page.
  • Addressed an issue where a file set to ask a user to change the password on next login fails to change the password if the client and server are not the same version.
  • Addressed an issue where a FileMaker-based number field added to an external data source table does not display a zero.
  • Addressed an issue where Auto-Complete in a field with multiple lined data fails to function unless you are on the last empty line of the text field.
  • Addressed an issue where a file set to use the system formats would still insert the date in layout mode with the file format, which may not match the system format.
  • Addressed a formula issue in the script for the New Layout/Report dialog to correctly account for localized formats to enter the correct view mode after a layout is created.
  • Addressed an issue for some customers with Instant Web Publishing that causes any custom home page in the Web Folder in the FileMaker application folder to be ignored. The problem could also prevent the contents of a container field from being visible in a browser if the Instant Web Publishing solution refers to files stored in the Web folder.

FileMaker Pro CommentaryFilemaker iPhone app? - Version: 10.0v3, 11/3/2009 01:54PM PST

I wish the Bento companion iPhone app would support Filemaker databases, or that a Filemaker app would be released. Power users need mobile databases too.

And it would be wonderful if the Export Records option would export field names. The Import option logically offers it, but if I want to manually attempt to move my data to the iPhone through a third party iPhone app, or Excel, I have to manually recreate all the field names as records when I export my databases.

the newly added script triggers of this version 10 are a new dimension to FileMaker - this update is a major step towards the right direction. You can program in all kind of programming styles - event based - procedural - functional - almost object oriented. in the right hands it is an amazing development environment and i love to run it on the mac - where i can have more then one client running accessing the same served database. not to mention it is an amazing calculator as well -
it got it almost all - it calculates better then Excel or Numbers - the speed got improved - about 40 % faster then in FMP 9. It scales up pretty nicely - still things left for improvement though: custom functions recursion limit should be adapted - we got faster hardware now to cope with and more integration of all formating parameters in custom functions - as well as status feedback of script triggers evoking scripts - for better abstraction. it is fun to rethink old filemaker habits and a lot of
clumsy or even elegant workarounds are not necessary anymore ..
again - it is only as good as its programmers - so if you find a solution with some frustration it might
not be filemaker to be blamed for. the filemaker certification program provides some measures ..

FileMaker Pro ReviewThe mySQL fallacy - Version: 10.0.1, 3/4/2009 10:22AM PST

In the documentation, it says that FM now opens mySQL and other external sources databases as if they were FileMaker database.

Don't be misled. You still can't just go in the open menu and select a mySQL database.

You'd think that after 10 versions, Filemaker would figure that people love mySQL and need to integrate with their FM solutions... Not so.

To be sure the solution involves dealing with OSX abysmal and unstable ODBC manager, or buying a third party solution from Actual technologies...

I can't wait to see that...

But all I know is that all this braging about mySQL compatibilty in Filemaker ads is just chit-chat, like that of a politician or such... It translates in "you and me speak" to "someday, maybe... if... then... else..."
