Product Description:

Wings is a relational database that manages bird sightings. Actually, it can manage pretty much most kinds of biological record keeping; it was simply designed with birds in mind. So, what can Wings do? It can do the usual things:
  • store sightings data and the supporting taxonomic, location, observer and source data
  • perform data entry one record at a time
  • manage millions of records
  • search and sort
  • manage multiple checklists
  • import and export
  • create columnar reports.
It can also do a few amazing things:
  • allow very rapid data entry using checklists
  • create spreadsheet reports
  • create reports in the form of checklists
  • create charts
  • create occurrence charts
  • allow you to create your own categories of data and associate that data with species, locations or sightings
  • save selections of records that can be loaded very quickly in later sessions
  • has a built in spreadsheet module
  • has a built in charting module
  • has a built in drawing module
  • perform statistical analysis

What's new in this version:

  • Enhancement. Notes – A new table ([Notes]) has been added which allows the user to add notes that apply to the entire data set. This table is not intended to replace the Comment fields that are available in other tables.
  • Enhancement. Reports – A new report, “Species by Checklistâ€? has been added. To access the report from the [Sightings] table select Reports > Spp x Checklists. This report has checklists as columns, species as rows, grey cells for species occurring on a checklist, and an X for a species observed. An example is included in the file “New in Wings 4.3â€?.
  •  Enhancement. Reports – When taxonomic data is used for rows of the  Report Wizard, the rows are now reported in taxonomic order rather than alphabetical order. You can re-sort the rows by alphabetical order if you wish.
  • Enhancement. Reports – The Report Wizard now allows a text field to be used on the Values tab. This works best when the intersection of a row and column is associated with at most one record.
  • Enhancement. Occurrence Charts – Occurrence Charts are described in Chapter 14 of the manual. The pages used to construct the elements of Occurrence Charts have been cleaned up. An error was also corrected. Elements were not correctly constructed for migratory periods with migratory periods overlapping December 31.
  • Minor Enhancement. Multimedia – A link to the [Species] table is made whenever an image associated with a nest is added.
  • Minor Enhancement. Data Entry by Checklist – The Go To button now uses a “containsâ€? search instead of a “starts withâ€? search.
  • Minor Enhancement. Reports – Improvements have been made to the Species Booklet report.
  • Minor Enhancement. Notes – The output form now contains the date each record was created or modified.
  • Minor Enhancement. Maintenance: Find Duplicates – This process was improved. In particular, the user can now exclude Sightings records with inexact dates or numbers.
  • Minor Enhancement. Report Wizard – The Taxonomy from current checklist/selection choices now allow codes as well as common and scientific names.
  • Bug fix. The Delete button for additional observers did not delete. Fixed.
  • Bug fix. The maintenance tool to change the name of a location was inadvertently deleted. Fixed. To change the name of a location: double-click on the location to open it in its input form, then select Tools > Special Functions and choose “Maintenance - Change Location Nameâ€?. Provide the new name in the dialog box that appears and click the green arrow (or hit the Enter key) to save the change.
  • Bug fix. When an existing location record was modified the modifications were not al- ways properly propagated to the corresponding supplementary locations. This bug is fixed. If you have modified location records after their creation, you can correct the supplementary records by opening the location table containing the modified records, selecting Tools > Special Functions and choosing “Update - Fix Supplementary Locationsâ€?.
  • Bug fix. When clicking the Map Information tab on the input forms of location tables where the computer’s measurement units had been set to centimetres, an Alert Box would appear indicating that an unexpected paper size was being used. Fixed.
  • Bug fix. The tab order for the Data Entry Defaults tab of [Sightings]Input was incorrect. Fixed.
  • Bug fix. In specific circumstances, the update taxonomic position tool did not update all [Species] records. Fixed.
  • Bug fix. When using the List tab while performing data entry by checklist, attributes were not always correctly recorded. In fact, the attribute recorded was the attribute for the preceding record. Fixed.
  • Bug fix. The special function Maintenance - Update Indicators could leave a trailing space on the Indicator field. Fixed.

Wings Troubleshooting ReportArchive may be damaged - Version: 4.0.0, 3/22/2005 07:06PM PST

I, too, cannot open the downloaded archive. I do have Stuffit Deluxe 9.0.1 and the associated expander. The error message says the archive may be damaged and gives error # 17537.

Would love to use this software, but it's no good if I can't open it! Help!

This archive fails to fully unstuff with an internal error, even after downloading it two times. If you try to use the app anyway, an error comes up stating that the database cannot be used. Heads up developer!

I can't believe this is free. It is a very powerful program, either (and perhaps especially) for the scientific person, or for hobbyists like me who forego some of the biological nitty gritty but want to keep a bird list and have good searching and reporting features. Keeps improving too. And if I grow in my scientific interest in birding, then my list will be in a program will all the data and features I will need for that.
