Product Description:

TinkerTool System is a professional all-in-one maintenance tool for the Macintosh platform. It allows you to change advanced operating system settings and offers a wide variety of maintenance features. The latest version comes with powerful new functions for Mac OS X Tiger, e.g. it gives you access to Access Control Lists (ACLs), can change the overall scaling factor for the screen, and allows you to administrate the Spotlight search databases.

TinkerTool System is very different from other maintenance applications because it never uses any scripts and is fully integrated into the security architecture of Mac OS X. For example, it never asks for your password itself but lets Mac OS X do this when necessary, always verifying whether an operation you have selected is allowed to be performed with your current user credentials or not.

Together with its sister program "TinkerTool" which is available at no charge, TinkerTool System is a perfect substitute for the following types of maintenance applications:

  • Cache and font cache cleaners,
  • Tools to access hidden preference settings,
  • Internet browser privacy protection tools,
  • Network tuning applications,
  • Programs to control the Macintosh startup chime,
  • Tools to remove international language support files,
  • Log file browsers,
  • and many others

The following features are available in TinkerTool System:

  • Clear the cache of the lookup subsystem
  • Repair the printer subsystem of Mac OS X (Jaguar and Panther, not necessary in Tiger)
  • Clean up cache files of the Internet browsers Safari, Internet Explorer®, Netscape®, Mozilla, FireFox, OmniWeb, Camino, Opera version 6, Opera version 7 or 8, iCab, Shiira, Flock, or the Desktop Web Browser

What's new in this version:

This is a maintenance release, reacting on technical changes found in recent OS and firmware updates from Apple. It only adds a few new functions.

  • Added new feature to delete native resource forks.
  • Added new feature to display system management information of Intel-based computers, including CPU, cache and memory details, mainboard and enclosure info, connector, slot and jumper lists.
  • The function to set an individual volume for the startup chime of Intel-based computers had to be removed because Apple introduced a bug in the Intel version of Mac OS X to make it fully compatible with the PPC version. TinkerTool System now offers an identical "mute startup chime" feature for all Macintosh systems, independent of their architecture.
  • The function to set the MTU value of Token Ring and IP over FireWire network interfaces (which was hidden for Panther and Tiger since release 1.2 of the application) is now available again for all versions of Mac OS X.
  • The function to set a background image for the login window now warns the user if s/he is attempting to set an image file with inappropriate permission settings.
  • For all delete operations of the application, the tables showing the list of objects that are about to be deleted will now use additional tool tips to make long file paths easier to read.
  • The compatibility with applications that create "self-made" login items which miss alias information and contain a tilde marker, has been enhanced. Those special login items are now considered to be valid if they refer to existing objects.
  • The preference setting for offering evaluation mode has been enhanced.
  • The warning dialog for incompatible operating system versions has been enhanced.
  • Corrected a problem where the list of installed languages was not updated under all conditions after the user had deleted some of the language packages.
  • Corrected a problem where the application window showed an incorrect height after the user had changed the ppi resolution setting for the Aqua user interface.
  • Corrected a problem where delete operations on folders were executed much slower than usual under very particular conditions.

TinkerTool System ReviewExcellent software, just one or two suggestions - Version: 2.1, 10/24/2009 03:34AM PST

I just wish TinkerTool System and TinkerTool were combined into one application. It would just make life a bit more simple. Otherwise it makes an excellent replacement for Xupport which seems to have been abandoned by the developer.

The upgrade cost should also be rethought. Say maybe $5.00 USD off for an upgrade. Just MHO.

TinkerTool System ReviewI like the previous version better - Version: 2.1, 8/31/2009 01:11PM PST

I'm a big fan of TinkerTool and TinkerTool System, but there are a few negative aspects with this new version:

As others have mentioned, there's no discounted price for owners of version one. The reason according to their website is that "The efforts to check legitimacy of the upgrade buyers would be higher than the product price."
I'm not sure about this. I would gladly provide them with my registration information so the effort would be on my part and not theirs. If 2 or more people provide identical information they could ban those serials.

The software itself received a change in the GUI. Navigation now requires an additional step. With the original version, users could select an icon on the toolbar and go directly to a specific feature (e.g., Maintenance, Clean Up, Files, etc.). With the revised version users have to "Show All" features and then select one. I did not find this as efficient as the previous version.

For evaluation purposes "You can launch the application five (5) times per computer only." Unfortunately, some features require multiple launches. For example, I cleared my font cache and had to logout. After login TTS2 was automatically launched to finish the task, so 2 out of 5 launches were used testing a single feature.

TinkerTool System 2 adds many features as well as Snow Leopard compatibility. For new users it may be worth it. In my case I see no reason to upgrade. I would rate the previous version with 5 stars, but with the lack of upgrade discount, the limited demo, and the inefficient interface, version 2 is not worthy of the same rating.

Indeed it is unfortunate that Dr. Bresink does not offer upgrade pricing to version 1 customers.
