If your hoping for something that you can use to work out your odds whilst playing this is not the software. It is far to slow to use because of the difficulty of choosing your cards in time. For $5 you don't have to pay much though. Its main use would be to check the odds of card scenerios when not playing, just to get famiular with what aq certain pair of cards are worth.

I would like to thank all who have taken the time to post comments on this program. Since the last comment this program (regarding v 1.0) has undergone 4 updates and is now at v 1.1. The interface has been made much more intuitive by adding a card selecting window which is activated by left click on a card. This is the ONLY program that I have ever seen, on Mac or PC, which calculates odds for Omaha Hi-Lo, a game in which figuring out odds is far from intuitive. It also handles the extremely popular Texas Hold'em.
The last commenter wined that the program isn't free before taking some unnecessary personal pot shots. Wouldn't it be nice if everything was free, Jack, however I have not priced this out of anyone pocket book. At just $5 it cost just a fraction of an average poker pot. If it helps you improve your understanding of Hold'em or Stud or Hi-Lo it may pay for itself many times over in your first hour of gambling. Regardless, those comments were made about a much less polished program than the current release.
I have received an extremely positive response from this program and hope that many more people continue to find it useful.
Thanks

This Should Be Freeware

It's one thing to pay a shareware fee to someone that knows what they're doing, but it's another story when someone tries to charge a shareware fee when they're just learning how to create programs.
To the author: Consider making your program a fully functional shareware program (not crippled ware) and accept the feedback from all the users as free advice until you get better at creating programs.
Once you have more experience and you can create a more professional program, then consider charging a shareware fee.

The concept and the basic layout are good, but needs a few things before I'd pay even $5 or $10 (there's apparently a range of possible prices when you select the "Purchase" menu). The single window makes it quite obvious how to use the app, BUT...
Critiques:
- Card disappear with a single-click! Yes, you can add them again by control clicking and choosing from the list, but that's unexpected default behavior - BAD
- On a 1024x768 screen, the un-resizable/un-scrollable window runs off the lower edge with more than 4 players (7 max), rendering the last 3 rows unreadable
- There's an odd "Prefs" tab, instead of a standard Prefs window (the menu choice is also grayed out)
- The "Help" menu simply says "Help isn't available"
- The "Dead Cards" area gives no feedback when a card is dragged over it
- Seven card stud is the only available Game choice, tho the Read Me promises two more (only when you pay/register?)
- The "Precision (Reps)" defaults to 10,000 and ranges to 10,000,000, but gives no indication of the benefits of choosing such a huge calc
- More importantly, there's no way to cancel the calc once started, and since a 3-player 10,000 rep calc takes about 3 sec. on my G3/500 iBook, presumably 10,000,000 will take 3000 sec. (50 min.), rendering the app useless for almost an hour. Yes, I'm sure a G4/G5 would reduce those times, but even tenfold, that's 5 minutes of wait time.
Suggestions (IMHO):
- Move the controls (buttons, slider, Dead Cards, etc.) to the left side to allow 7 rows of cards to be displayed at 1024x768 (ideally 800x600)
- Allow placement of cards (from a menu or mini-deck) rather than just by control-clicking
- Allow the window to be resized and/or don't don't force-hide the window when switching to another app
- The "Deal" button should be at least the same size as the "Calculate" button, since it seems just as likely to be clicked as "Calc" depending on the situation
- Limit "Reps" to 1,000,000 (do we need 10M?) and allow cancelling - waiting or force quitting is a drag
- Add keyboard shortcuts for Deal, Calc, Clear
- Make a real Preferences dialog
I'll definitely look back around v1.2 or so (maybe March judging by the fast releases thus far), but for now POC just misses a "Yes" recommendation for rough edges.

...but the calculations (so far) appear correct. The calculations are limited to 7 players, however, which is not practical for a full casino or online table. Features I like: a slider for adjusting the number of repetitions the calculator goes through before giving odds, pull-down menus for selecting game or number of players.
Things that can be improved: The calculations cannot be stopped in progress without force quitting the app. The calculator window is much larger than it needs to be and there is no option to resize it. Depending on your screen resolution, it is possible for the bottom of the window to be pushed out of view. The menu still has all the default "NewApplication" titles for everything, but since there aren't really any preferences to change, this is solely an irritation of aesthetics. It has hung twice in an hour of use (both times with calculations with 100000 iterations or more).
With some minor cleanup, this can be a very useful tool for us poker geeks!

I just downloaded this app and it seems to do one thing and one thing well. Essentially, it deals a number of hands and calculates the odds for each hand's chance of winning. I think it would be nice if the app actually allowed you to place the cards being dealt, as it could be used for some benefit at online casinos and such. It would give you an idea of when you should fold and when you should go for gold.
