Product Description:

Mac OS X version supports Stripe and Mirror (RAID levels 0 and 1) volumes on any combination of FireWire, ATA, SCSI, USB and Fibre Channel drives.

What's new in this version:

This version introduces a new driver mechanism which always stores two copies of the RAID header information for each volume. In the unlikely event that the RAID header gets corrupted, the driver can now use the backup copy to correctly mount the volume. In addition, this version adds several fixes for problems which our users found during the first few months of using Leopard. This version also improves compatibility with professional applications like FinalCut Pro and Aperture when running Leopard. SoftRAID 3.6.7 further improves the reliability of starting both Intel and PowerPC Macs running Leopard.

Operating System Requirements:

This product is designed to run on the following operating systems:

  • Mac OS X 10.5 Intel
  • Mac OS X 10.5 PPC
  • Mac OS X 10.4 Intel
  • Mac OS X 10.4 PPC

Additional Requirements:

  • Mac OS X 10.4 or later

SoftRAID ReviewApple's RAID offerings are limited at best... - Version: 3.6.7, 9/25/2008 09:27AM PST

Yes, Apple does have built-in software RAID support. However having used it extensively I can say that SoftRAID is far better and far more intuitive than Apple's offering.

There are two main problems with Apple's software RAID. The first is notification. It doesn't have any bells, alarms, email, etc. alerts to say "hey, your RAID slices are out of sync!" you have to periodically run Apple's Disk Utility software to see, oh, the RAID went out of sync a week ago, a drive failed, etc.

In addition when attempting to rebuild a RAID set Disk Utility is as rudimentary and counter-intuitive as it gets. The biggest shortcoming of the Apple software RAID is that when rebuilding you have no idea which slice has the most current data and which fell out of sync, hence I lost a month of work on a set due to a disconnected drive, which Apple's RAID software never warned me about.

SoftRAID on the otherhand, while not perfect, notifies you in the Finder as soon as there is a sync or drive problem within a RAID set. I'm still waiting for them to implement out of the box SMS or email alerts but it still trounces Apple in this regard. The software is also much more intuitive (though the interface is still a throwback to OS 9 and could also be improved for clarity). All in all there is no comparison between the two. SoftRAID is inexpensive enough that you'd have to be crazy or broke to use Apple's implementation.

SoftRAID ReviewStill a Joke... - Version: 3.6.7, 6/25/2008 08:14PM PST

Well, once again SoftRaid fails to deliver RAID5 that has been promised for years now.

But nevermind...
10.6 has ZFS so SoftRaid is finished. (Apple proof!) and I hear ZFS is present in the 10.6 Client Developer Preview released this month also.

The only future path I can see is that SoftRaid dump their core code and keep their GUI for ZFS management.
Otherwise it's good bye SoftRaid and watch your customers drop off as they laugh at your feeble attempts to market against ZFS.

I added two enterprise 1TB drives to my G5. Fired this up and bingo and very fast Mirror RAID array with zero hassle. I have an auto backup and read speed is noticeable improved.
SR is affordable, well supported and very regularly updated. Five Star in my book
