Books ReviewGreat program - Version: 3.2.5c, 10/23/2009 06:34AM PST

I registered on this site just to review this program. It's exactly what I was looking for, and you can't beat the price (free). Not exactly as intuitive as it could be (took me a while to figure out how to sort by fields other than the title), and the search is still a little wonky (it would not come up with the common, mass-market paperback edition of a popular book on a title search - I had to use the ISBN #), but overall it's already proved to be very handy.

Books ReviewStill rudimental - Version: 3.2.5a, 4/16/2009 06:11AM PST

thomasmarch
Promising but still rudimental. For instance, after I've entered the name of the author, I have found it impossible to view a list under any heading other than "title" even though I created an "author" list heading. So that's pretty useless.

Also: when you enter all the data about a book in a particular list (say "Nonfiction") and you have a lot of lists (say "Nonfiction" "Geography" "Poetry "Architecture" etc.) there is no way to just view ALL of your books as a single list. You have to open that particular list. Which is another annoyance.

Neverthless this application does have some promising features but before you start spending hours and hours inputting all your info, be aware that at some future point you may find a better app and have to do it all over again.

I'm still looking for a mature application of this type. But this one ain't it.

Books ReviewWow! This freebie does exactly what I wanted - Version: 3.2.1, 9/29/2008 08:12AM PST

I am an avid reader, often reading a book a day. However, my cleaning lady occasionally shelves my unread books with my read ones. Since I'm terrible at remembering titles, I often begin a book only to realize I've already read it. With this great application, I can keep separate lists for unready and already read. I haven't tried to add new fields yet, but I intend to add fields for "donated," "sold," "loaned" and "given away."

Books CommentarySecurity/Plugins - Version: 3.1.8, 4/6/2008 04:36PM PST

I cannot figure out how to download and install plugins manually. I can see how to allow the application to do this but I am *very* reluctant to take this route. I don't know the source of the plugins, I cannot run them through a virus-scanner before installing/decompressing.

I would also like to know if the application respects proxy settings when contacting sources for quickfill information - and I would like to know the precise addresses it is using to do so.

I note that the project page on Sourceforge has not been updated for sometime and that there is no obvious link to a source release of the current version (as opposed to source from the svn repository). I tend to rely on Sourceforge's emailed notices about updates to projects and I (sometimes) like to see and/or compile the source.

This looks like a very promising application, but it is not quite as transparent as I would like - especially for an application that is going to be "calling out" a lot.

- a very untypical mac user, of course

Books Developer NoteNew users - do not download 3.1.8b - Version: 3.1.8b, 3/8/2008 06:59AM PST

3.1.8b is an experimental test release intended for a specific small audience. I explicitly asked that no one list this version on sites such as VT, but it seems that someone has reading comprehension problems. If you're a new user to Books, I recommend using 3.1.7 until the official release of 3.1.8 is ready.

Thank you.

I was looking for a replacement after entering a lot of books into library thing and suddenly stumbling upon the books limit. So I tried books, imported by librarything list into it, and used the batch quickfill visible items. And it worked very well! Great job!

Books ReviewPretty good so far - Version: 3.1.1, 9/23/2007 07:05AM PST

So far Books is a pretty nice application. Its interface is easy to use, and it seems fairly customizalbe. It does have some omissions that seem strange to me, such as no standard fields for any sort of catalog number like Dewey or Library of Congress. It has also has no standard field for price, and the main reason I need a book catalog is for insurance purposes. And, like many similar book catalog apps, it has a field for reviews, which seems odd to me for an app catalog books owned, but maybe that's not how a lot of folks use it? Books separates info about a book into several panes, which provides a less cluttered view but far less information. I can imagine that this would get to be a problem if you had to enter many books by hand, or if your need for a particular field doens't match the developer's understanding of the field's priority. However, this app is pretty polished at this point.

I prefer Bookpedia. True, it's shareware but not expensive and certainly worth it's price.

Books Commentaryfeedback data is out of date - Version: 3.0 beta 1, 7/9/2006 05:16AM PST

It's 2006. the feedbck may be useful, below, but some is misleading. I've popped over to the site, there is a beta 3 in production, and it all looks very promising. I've downloaded it and will try it out.
Perhaps version tracker doesn't really gather comments easily, and commenting on software ought to be built in and posted to sites like this, linked to your mail programme. That's down to VT and pthers to offer for thier commenting system. My god the the service sideof the web can be poor and slow to develop. THe htought of commenting on software I use via Version Tracker ffrightens me. I just don't normally.
