AutoAPOD is a great new system extension that allows your Mac OS X computer to instantly download a great Astronomy picture daily. Explore the beauty of the cosmos from the comfort of your own home or office.
What is APOD? APOD stands for Astronomy Picture Of the Day. It is a web site hosted by a dedicated group of volunteers that wish to share the beauty of the skies with you. What is AutoAPOD? AutoAPOD is a two part program for your Macintosh that not only can fetch the "Astronomy Picture of the Day" for you, but also set it as your desktop backdrop. Who makes AutoAPOD? AutoAPOD was created by Colourfull Creations. Colourfull Creations is in no way associated with the talented individuals who run, or contribute, to APOD. We are just a team of programmers hoping to share the hard work of the APOD individuals with you.

What's new in this version:

  • Feature - added the ability to check for program updates from within the program.
  • Feature - added the ability to browse the APOD photo archive
  • Feature - added the ability to view APOD archive pages
  • Feature - can now set an archived photo as a desktop picture

I was fairly disappointed that this program messes with the excellent photos available from the website (http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/astropix.html) and leaves them of a poor quality when placed on the desktop. They end up all jpeg-elated and low res. If this were improved the program would be great though. These photos are great as is.

AutoAPOD CommentaryVersion 2.0 Crashes Sytsem Prefs App - Version: 2.0, 7/27/2004 03:23PM PST

I tried this on a G4 running OS X 10.3.4 and when I opened System Prefs to access its preference pane, the pane appeared and then the System Prefs app promptly crashed. Never did get to make any changes to the panel. Fortunately, there is an uninstaller included, and it works.

Yeah, not bad. Like others, I don't want to have to reboot to have to load a new picture.
