DansGuardian Troubleshooting ReportOne Small Problem... - Version: 1.0, 1/29/2005 05:17PM PST

WiFiRules
There seems to be one small problem with using a web proxy server like this... since it's hitting your router or DNS server directly, unless the machine you're looking to for DNS is Rendezvous-enabled, Rendezvous no longer works for web connections.

For example, I have a machine on my network called FileServer. Its Rendezvous name is fileserver.local, and until I installed Dansguardian, I could use fileserver.local as its domain name in Safari. Now I need to use its' IP.

Does anyone know a workaround for this?

DansGuardian ReviewGood Port - Version: 1.0, 11/13/2004 04:54PM PST

Very good and intelligent port of Squid and Dansguardian to Mac OS X without sacrificing 3rd-party compaitibility. Basically this is a cute GUI installer for the Squid proxy server and Dansguardian. It even works well in Panther.

All you need to do to have the filtering working is to install it, configure your proxy settings (System Preferences / Network / Proxies) to use 127.0.0.1 as your web proxy on Port 8080.

Want to tinker with the filtering? Go into the terminal and cd to /usr/local/etc/dansguardian and pico any of the text files in the directory. Most configuration is in dansguardian.conf, but some other handy files include the self-explanatory bannedsitelist, bannedurllist, exceptionphraselist, exceptionurllist.

DansGuardian ReviewGet it! - Version: 1.0, 9/23/2003 04:34PM PST

Fabulous software! I will say that for the UNIX novice (including me) it can be rather daunting at first. With that having been said you do simply have to install the package and it works and works great after configuring your network settings to use port 8080 for web traffic. The most confusing thing is that there's ABSOLUTELY NO GUI interface. You better know how to use Terminal and UNIX text editors if you want to do any configuration.

Otherwise this is some of the most intelligent content filtering software I've seen.
