For those looking for a screensaver that will turn off the LCD, not just turn it black, there is one called Blackened Pixels (rated 5★), located here: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/31918
I've not tried Basic Black, but have used a similar screensaver called Just Black (rated 5★):

This wasn't what I was looking for, but in all fairness, none of the "black screen" "screensavers" do what I want. Like the rest of them, what this really does is display a black image. The problem is that with LCDs, a black screen means the panel is sucking maximum power. Think about it, LCDs work by powering up pixels to block the backlight. In order to make the entire screen look black, every one of the millions of red, green and blue pixels has to be turned to full opacity. What I want is just the opposite -- minimum power use. Specifically, I already have Energy Saver set to put the screen to sleep after about five minutes of inactivity, but there are times when I know I'll be stepping away for a few hours, and I want the screen to sleep immediately (without having to change and later change back the Energy Saver setting or hitting the power switch on the monitor). Why can't somebody do that?
