Product Description:

Macromedia Contribute is the easiest way for individuals and teams to update, create, and publish web content to any HTML website. Administrative controls let nontechnical users make content changes, while Contribute maintains site standards for style, layout, and code. Macromedia Contribute will save you time and streamline your web-content maintenance process.

What's new in this version:

  • Nested Connections
In past versions of Contribute, it was not possible to create separate connections to different levels of the same website. Contribute 3.1 allows you to create overlapping, or "nested," site connections (i.e. http://mysite and http://mysite/folder1). This allows administrators to delegate administration of parts of the website to other people within the organization.

Note: Child sites do not inherit administrative settings from parent sites.
  • Streamlined File Publishing
In past versions of Contribute, the process of uploading non-HTML files (like images and Office Documents) directly to the server was confusing. Contribute 3.1 allows you to publish non-html pages from your computer to your website through an item in the File Menu. This enhancement removes several extra steps in publishing a non-html page to your website.
  • File Lock Breaking Interface
In past versions of Contribute, the process of overriding somebody else's file checkout had to be done manually. With Contribute 3.1, an Administrator can override a user's file checkout (break a lock) using a simple user interface. This interface appears just below the Browser Address bar when the administrator browses to a page that has been checked out.
  • Insert Breeze Content Link
In past versions of Contribute, the process of linking to Breeze Content required several steps. Now, Contribute 3.1 can connect directly to a Breeze server or content repository, which allows users to easily create a link to content on a Breeze server by using the Insert > Breeze Link... menu item.
  • Replace File on Publish
In past versions of Contribute, users are not able to "overwrite" or replace a non-HTML file upon publish and Contribute would created a copy of the file with a modified name (i.e. Filename.doc and Filename_001.doc). Contribute 3.1 gives you the option to replace a non-html page on your website with a file from your computer.
  • Guard Page Override
In Contribute 3.1, administrators can manage a site even if a guard page cannot be found. This enables administrators to manage websites on servers which don't support index files or directory listings.

Note: Creating a connection to a website without a known Guard Page poses some security risk and is not a recommended best practice.
  • FlashPaper Uninstall
Contribute 3.1 on the Windows platform adds an option to uninstall FlashPaper using the Start Menu. This option is located at Start > Programs > Macromedia > Uninstall Macromedia FlashPaper 2. This allows customers to uninstall FlashPaper but keep Contribute.
  • Local Draft Warning
Contribute 3.1 warns users as they quit Contribute that any drafts they have checked out will not be accessible from another machine. This serves to avoid confusion that drafts were somehow stored on the server, rather than locally.
  • CPS maintenance improvements
In Contribute 3.0, some users became "stuck" in specific cases where a website has been copied from one server to another on a CPS-managed website. Contribute 3.1 makes it easier to recover from situations where the hub file doesn't match the actual server information.
Other enhancements and fixes in this update:
  • CFinclude rendering: Error occurs when previewing a page with CFinclude tags—Fixed.
  • Image copied from Office document references local file. Mac only—Fixed
  • Can not scroll through draft history. Mac only—Fixed
  • Dependent files within ASPX pages not uploaded—Fixed
  • Warning when base template is missing—Enhancement
  • Connectivity improvements for SFTP and FTP—Enhancement
  • Drag and Drop ability extended to more media types—Enhancement
  • Better cookie support for WebDAV sites that use cookies—Enhancement

Using the latest version of Contribute CS3 (v4.1) on PC and Mac platforms - generates lots of random errors with users connections. Roles continually returned invalid when users try to access the site. Lots of problems documented on Adobe's forums, but very little help delivered directly from Adobe - no authorized reps lurking the forums to provide help, etc... VERY bad support experiences. I would NOT recommend this product, as the problems I've experienced have been randomly occurring, difficult to replicate and the solutions are never the same twice.

The fact that Adobe has almost no presence on the forums .leaves me to believe that they don't see a long life for this product, themselves.

After several phone calls back and fourth to Adobe... I've come to learn that Adobe does not support flashpaper technology in the latest version of contribute for OSX.

Yes. It was in Version 3.0. They decided to remove it for version 4.0. No, it doesn't make any sense. Am I pissed at Adobe? You bet.
