Product Description:

Mozilla Thunderbird is a redesign of the Mozilla mail component. Our goal is to produce a cross platform stand alone mail application using the XUL user interface language. Our intended customer is someone who uses Mozilla Firebird (or another stand alone browser) as their primary browser and wants a mail client based on mozilla that "plays nice" with the browser. In addition, by focusing solely on stand alone mail, we believe we can make some dents in the overall footprint and performance of the mail client by removing components and chrome we don't need. On top of that, the UI becomes much cleaner as a stand alone application as opposed to being part of the mozilla suite.

In addition to the feature set found in Mozilla Mail, Thunderbird has several new features and improvements to make your mail and new experience better. Highlights include:
  • The ability to customize your toolbars the way you want them. Choose View / Toolbars / Customize inside any window.
  • UI extensions can be added to Mozilla Thunderbird to customize your experiene with specific features and enchancements that you need. Support for extensions. Extensions allow you to add features particular to your needs such as offline mail support. A full list of available extensions can be found here.
  • A new look and feel. Thunderbird also supports a large number of downloadable themes which alter the appearance of the client.
  • An addressing sidebar for mail compose which makes it easy and convient to add address book contacts to emails.
  • Online help includes a FAQ, tips and tricks and other useful information.
  • Simplified preferences UI and menus.
  • Footprint and performance improvements.

What's new in this version:

  • Message Tags: Create your own tags for organizing email. Messages can be assigned any number of tags. Tags can be combined with saved searches and mail views to make it easier to organize email.
  • Visual Theme: Thunderbird 2's theme and user interface have been updated to improve usability and maximize screen real estate.
  • Session History Navigation: Back and Forward buttons allow navigation through message history.
  • Advanced Folder Views: Customize the folder pane to show favorite, unread or recent folders.
  • Easy Access to Popular Web Mail Services: Gmail and .Mac users can access their accounts in Thunderbird by simply providing their user names and passwords.
  • Improved Support For Extensions: Extensions can now add custom columns to the message list pane in addition to storing custom message data in the mail database.
  • Improved New Mail Notification Alerts: New mail alerts include information such as the subject, sender and message preview text.
  • Folder Summary Popups: Mouse over a folder with new messages to see a summary of the new messages in that folder.
  • Saved Search Folder Performance: Search results for saved search folders are now cached, improving folder loading performance.
  • Find As You Type: Finds and highlights message text as you type.
  • Improved Filing Tools: Recent folder menu items for moving and copying messages to recently used folders. Move / Copy again functionality.
  • Updates to the Extension System: The extension system has been updated to provide enhanced security and to allow for easier localization of extensions.
  • New Windows installer: Based on Nullsoft Scriptable Install System, the new Windows installer resolves many long-standing issues.
  • Windows Vista Support: Many enhancements and fixes for Windows Vista.

Mozilla Thunderbird ReviewThunderbird - Version: 2.0.0.17, 12/9/2008 08:38AM PST

Overall, I had been quite happy with Thunderbird up until this latest version. I especially love the add-on called Clippings Manager that allows me to insert "boilerplate" text into my email messages, as I send out quite a few business messages.

However, with this latest update, suddenly I can no longer "Save All" with my attachments. It seems permanently grayed out. Used to work just fine, with one bit of weirdness. Even though I had switched from one email to another, if I didn't actually click once on the "new" attachment in the visible email, it would try to resave the attachment from the previous email. Odd. But I receive emails with several attachments all day long and it is a royal pain to have to click on each one individually within a single email and save each separately.

I, too, have always been frustrated that no matter what I do, it saves all the attachments to my desktop. I frequently have to double check that I have an actual saved version in a client's folder before I can throw away the extra one, left over from viewing, that's been placed on my desktop. Hello - don't need them on the desktop!

Hello, I used Eudora 6.x for several years and I was very happy for the following reasons:

1, fastest email search and text browsing available!
2. very stable
3. attactive graphic and layout
4. easy to use and customize
5. very user friendly

With Leopard OS 10.5 I moved to Thunderbird. First version 2.0.0.9/12 and now 2.0.0.14. After a lot of testing I can report the following experience with it:

1. poor layout
2. VERY sloooooow to handle large volume of incoming emails
3. when adding dictionaries, the menu bar got corrupted (could NOT display the text formatting panel any more and had to fully re-install the application!).

In conclusion? Mmmm. Missing the old Eudora a lot!
Puffo.
